Wedding trip turns tragic; 2 dead, 18 injured as vehicle veers off road

TURA, March 14: A trip to a wedding revelry turned tragic after the pick-up truck they were travelling in veered off the road and fell into an odd 100-feet deep gorge. According to information received, two of the passengers in the ill-fated vehicle lost their lives in the incident with one succumbing on the spot and the other dying upon reaching the hospital at Sibbari near the border of Bangladesh in South Garo Hills (SGH) district.

A total of 18 people from the same group were also seriously injured in the incident. The accident took place in the village of Buga Dongram village.

As per the Superintendent of Police in SGH, the accident took place at about 11:30 am and that 10 of the 18 people who were injured were rushed to Sibbari hospital where they were admitted. Meanwhile 5 of the injured people have been referred to Tura Civil Hospital.

Unfortunately, 13 year old Chikam Ch Momin who was among the 10 people who were rushed to Sibbari hospital succumbed to his injuries. He was the son of Sopen R Marak of Ramchenga.

“One of the passengers died on the spot. Another died after they reached the hospital. As network is pathetic, we have not been able to get updates on the incident. The wedding party was going from Ramchenga (SGH) to the wedding spot in Wachalgre,” said the SP, Abraham T Sangma.

The victims were travelling in a Bolero Pik-Up (ML-08C 5824) which in villages sometimes carries more than 35 people in crammed up space.

The person who died on the spot has been identified as Krit Ch Sangma of Wachalgre under Kapasipara Post Office, in SGH.

“The vehicle fell about 30 metres (98.4 feet) down a hill from the village road, which led to the many being injured. Details are not fully known as the injured were immediately rushed to the nearby Sibbari PHC for treatment. Due to issues of network connectivity, we have not been able to verify details fully,” stated the SP.
