TURA, April 15: The C&RD blocks of Resubelpara and Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills (NGH) district and parts of West Khasi Hills (WKH) were hit by storms leading to many houses being damaged with some being completely blown away. The storm in NGH occurred early on Monday morning at about 3 am, leaving large scale wreckage in its wake.

According to district officials, villages like Resubelpara, Jonglapara, Sualmari among others were hit in both blocks with officials now making an assessment of the damage done. A complete picture, due to the remoteness of many areas hit by the storm, will only be available on Tuesday.

Many schools have also reportedly been damaged during the event.

“We have reports of some houses being completely damaged in the storm but are awaiting an assessment from the ground. We will be able to provide more information as and when its available,” said the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of NGH, SC Sadhu.

People hit by the storm are currently being sheltered in various locations on a temporary basis with the administration working to ensure food and accommodation to all that have been affected.

“We are doing all we can to ease their problems. Relief materials are also being provided to the affected families,” added the DC.

Apparently the storm is the same one that caused havoc in parts of Jaintia Hills as well as in parts of West Khasi Hills on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, a similar storm that created havoc in West Jaintia Hills on Sunday afternoon struck parts of West Khasi Hills on Monday.

Thunderstorm accompanied with gusty wind and lighting damaged houses and uprooted trees in two to three villages in the district.

The Deputy Commissioner, T Lyngwa informed that he has sent his officers to conduct an assessment of the places where the storm caused damage.

On Sunday afternoon, a thunderstorm and rain wreaked havoc in West Jaintia Hills (WJH) district damaging houses, a church and uprooting trees.

The places which were most hit the worst by Sunday’s storm are Ummulong, Sabahmuswang, Mukhla, Khliehtyrshi and Jowai.

It was reported that the roof of a house at Caroline Colony in Jowai town was blown away by the storm and a church building at Dongmihsngi in Ummulong was partially damaged.

An assessment to ascertain the amount of damage caused by the storm in WJH has been directed by the district administration.

It has been informed that apart from the assessment, relief materials for the affected people will also be issued.

As per the Indian Metrological Department, thunderstorm accompanied with gusty wind and lighting is likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on Tuesday.

It also says that light to moderate rain and thundershower is very likely to occur at few places over most of the North Eastern states.
