SHILLONG, July 31:
Though he did not make it to Raisina hills, Former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma is all set to go for a new “political party” – with a common aim in mind that is to unite all “tribal” leaders of the country under one party.
“The Core Committee of Tribal Forum of India will soon meet at New Delhi to discuss the possibility of forming a new party which will be tribal centric but open for all”, PA Sangma told reporters here.
He said, “The delegation of the committee would also meet the Election Commission of India (ECI) on this regard”.
Sangma, who is projecting himself as the leader of the tribal communities in the country said, “I will be addressing the gathering to thank tribal people (for their support in the last election) and to call for unity of the tribals.”
He informed that he would also be addressing a conference of all tribal leaders at Raipur on August 9. The day also coincides with the United Nation’s International Day for the Indigenous People.
“The conference would take stock of the outcome of the last Presidential elections and to chalk out a future plan for the tribals,” Sangma added.
Earlier, Sangma who is also the former leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Tuesday met its state leaders and NCP legislators seeking their support with regards to his new political initiative.
Besides, Sangma had also met leaders from Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. “Even leaders from Assam are in town for the discussion”, Sangma said.
Furthermore, Sangma who has been the former Meghalaya Chief Minister announced that he is no longer interested in participating in the state elections.
“I will not contest in state politics anymore”, Sangma said while reacting to query on whether he would contest in the 2013 elections in the state.
Refuting to rumors on him being elected to the Rajya Sabha, the veteran politician said, “I ‘prefer’ to be voted by the people to the Lok Sabha” adding “There are 50 reserved seats for tribals in the country. I want to be elected by the people from any of the seats in the country”.
