SHILLONG, Feb 21: The former Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Pynshngain N Syiem has left his fate in the hands of the electorate who he says want him to continue with his service to the indigenous people.

“I had been the Chief Executive Member of the KHADC and had taken up various issues affecting the indigenous people. I believe that the people understand and still want me to continue my contributions,” Syiem who is contesting the upcoming polls to the KHADC said here on Thursday.

It may be noted here that Syiem, who is the MDC from Mawsynram, recently joined the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) after he quit the People’s Democratic Front (PDF), a party which he floated before the Assembly elections held last year.

He decided to contest the upcoming district council polls from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkrah constituency, which is presently represented by PDF sitting MDC James Ban Basaiawmoit, after he lost the Mawsynram MLA seat.

Refusing to comment on the other candidates he will face this time around, Syiem said, “I will not talk ill against anybody as I have decided to leave it to the wisdom of the people.”

Asked why he had switched over to the NPP, Syiem said, “I had fought and resigned from the Congress to protect the interest of the indigenous community.”

“I had to leave the PDF because they have sidelined me as the founder of the party after I lost the MLA elections,” he added.

“Therefore I decided that it is better for me to be with a party which is giving hope to the people of the North East region. I should be in a party which can give service to the people,” Syiem said.

With regards to his repeated defeats in the two elections, Syiem however said that he is not quitter and always believe that “failure is the key to success”.
