SHILLONG, Jan 25: Along with the rest of the country the National Voters Day was celebrated at the State Central Library, Auditorium, Shillong Wednesday. Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, P B O Warjri graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
As part of the National Voters Day celebration a Marathon race, painting and essay competition was organized by the Chief Electoral Officer, Shillong.
Speaking on the occasion Warjri stated “as we are living in a democratic country, every citizen has a very important role to play in choosing their representative by casting their vote”. Stressing on how it is important in electing their representative, the Additional Chief Secretary said that it is the legislators who passed the laws, determined to pay taxes and implement the government schemes, therefore it is the general public to decide and elect their representative that will make laws and to rule the country or state.
He also urged to every section of the society to participate in election and to cast their vote in a reasonable manner.
Earlier, Chief Electoral Officer, P. Naik in his brief speech said that the motive celebrating National Voters Day on January 25 is to make election more meaningful and to create motivation among the people to enroll in a draft electoral roll.
He informed that Meghalaya has witnessed a significant rise in enrollment of electorates which is 70,000 this year from 30,000 last year while, the total number of electorates in the State is around 13.75 lakhs.
He further reminded that voting cannot be forced upon but has to be done voluntarily.
Paik also enlightened that people can now opt for on-line registration of their names for the electoral roll by clicking into megh.co.in, and by downloading the standard forms and support the applications with proof pertaining to individuals.
A large number of people from all walks of life gather to celebrate the National Voters Day.
