Shillong, Apr 30:
After United Democratic Party (UDP), now Opposition NCP in Meghalaya Monday urged the state government to convene an all-party meet along with the agitating NGOs to end the deadlock on the issue of enrolment of “dubious” voters adding the issue should be discussed at all levels.
NCP has suggested that the state Government should adhere to the suggestion made by their coalition partner while dealing with such an important issue.
UDP Working President Paul Lyngdoh in a statement Sunday urged the state government to convene an all-party meet.
UDP, a coalition partner of the government and has also called on the Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh to stress on governments initiative to contain the deteriorating law and order across the state.
The leader of Opposition (LO) Conrad Sangma (NCP) said, “The issue of bogus and doubtful voters is real and needs to be addressed, without impugning on the rights of genuine non-tribal voters.”
While expressing support to the call of the UDP, Conrad said, “The issue needs to be discussed at all level with the NGOs.”
He further added, “While we extend our support to the call of the UDP, we feel the government should have taken more initiatives when the talks with the NGOs failed.”
Earlier, talks between the Government and the agitating NGOs on the issue of enrollment of dubious voters with doubtful antecedents has failed to yield any concrete result even as the state Government has appealed to the NGOs to suspend agitation and give it sometime as the matter is related to Election Commission with the State government having no role to play.
However, later the government decided to remove the special voter facilitation cell at the DC’s office as a first step to pacifying the NGOs. Government has decided to shift the special facilitation cell to the room of the Additional District Magistrate at the office of the DC.
According to the government’s decision, the voter registration forms would be distributed by the ADM in charge of East Khasi Hills district, D M Wahlang.
