SHILLONG, July 31:
Lauding the arrest of the GNLA chief, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) however Tuesday called on the state government to find out ways and means – a solution to address the “root-cause” of the problem of insurgency in the state and Garo Hills region in particular.
“The government should address the root cause of the problem as to why several outfits have cropped up in the Garo Hills region in a very short span of time”, Opposition Leader (NCP) Conrad K Sangma said while congratulating the government and the state police on their achievement.
He added, “They should not be complacent that the GNLA chairman is under police custody but to look for solutions to the myriads of problems that exist in the Garo Hills,”
Conrad however said the police should not derive any self-gratification out of the arrest of the GNLA chief as his arrest is insignificant if the outfit is not “neutralized”.
Stating that the issues of backwardness, the increasing number of educated unemployed youths, illiteracy and all sorts of social problems exist at the grassroots level, the opposition leader said, “The government should create a long time solution, an environment of opportunities that enable youths to get out their frustrations”.
“If such environment is created, the youth would not be easily influenced in joining any militant outfits or to fall prey to criminal forces that spoil their future career”, he added.
Champion Sangma, the police officer-turned-rogue, was arrested by the state police along the International Indo-Bangladesh border Monday, hours after he was pushed by Bangladesh security forces.
He had co-founded the GNLA along with Sohan D Shira, the C-in-C of the outfit which is active in three Western Garo Hills districts in Meghalaya.
