TURA, March 19: The proposed sit in demonstration of the Garo State Movement Committee (GSMC) was halted just a little after it began due to the Model Code of Conduct currently in place due to the upcoming elections to the Tura MP seat.

About 40-50 members of the GSMC had gathered in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Tura to continue their ongoing demand for a separate state. While permission had earlier been given for the holding of a demonstration, the same was cancelled due to the onset of elections.

The protesters were led by the chairman of the GSMC, Nikman Marak but were asked to leave the venue at about 11:15 am on Tuesday. The members of the organization complied with the request and left the place peacefully.

The GSMC has been leading the agitation for a separate state for the Garos for quite some time and have over a period of time held many rallies and demonstrations to push forward their demand.
