Shillong, Jan 20:
Leader of Opposition (LO) in Meghalaya Assembly, Conrad K Sangma (NCP) who is also a member of the Committee on illegal check gates along the National Highway in State, has demanded immediate closure of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) weigh bridge at ‘Wageasi’ in East Garo Hills.
Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Conrad revealed that the particular weigh bridge is operating ‘illegally’ as it has not been given the permission by the district council pertaining to the lessee failing to make full security deposit.
The lessee, disclosed as one Mitilla Ch Momin, had to make a security deposit of Rs 28 lakhs to the District Council by November 25 last year, but has made a deposit of Rs 20 lakhs, falling shortfall of Rs 8 lakhs.
As per the register recovered by the committee, the weigh bridge is collecting Rs 1200 per truck while in the receipt book the entry made are Rs 50 for entry of truck and Rs 75 per ton of excessive weight.
The district council had leased the weigh bridge on October 14, 2011 with November 25 as the last date for making full security deposit. When the lessee failed to do so, a show cause notice was served to her on December 15, 2011 from the office of Chief Forest Officer of GHADC, asking her to furnish a written reply to the office by December 21, 2011; failing which the lease agreement would be cancelled.
Interestingly, when the Chief Forest Officer was questioned, he denied issuing any receipts to the lessee. He said the receipt books should have his signature besides the seal of GHADC. The receipt book were indeed without his signature.
With this finding, Conrad contested that the weigh bridge should immediately be closed as there was enough evidence.
