Regional Workshop on Inclusive Education held for North East States

SHILLONG, July 10: The Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India in collaboration with State Education Mission Authority of Meghalaya (SSA) organized a Regional Workshop on Inclusive Education (IE) at Siloam Retreat Centre, Umniuh khwan, Shillong, on July 9 – 10, with an aim to formulate strategies for support and inclusion for Children With Special Need (CWSN) in schools, while providing them equitable quality education.

The theme of the Workshop was “To Develop State-wise Inclusive Education Learning Outcomes Implementation Action Plan for 2013-14”. The objective of the workshop was to critically review the present status of Inclusive Education; to consolidate the existing academic support structures and IE activities for enrollments, retention and enhanced learning outcomes of CWSN; to consolidate the Management Information System on CWSN; and to build convergence and synergy between the Government Departments/ Institutions and Civil Society.
Around 70 participants drawn from all the North East States including Sikkim participated in the Workshop.
Principal Secretary to Government of Meghalaya, Education Department, P.S. Thangkhiew, was the Chief Guest and stressed on the importance of collating accurate data on number of CWSN while also emphasizing on the need to enhance engagement & collaboration with NGOs and Civil Societies working in the area.
The MHRD was represented by Director, Dr. Md. Ahmed Ariz. F.R. Kharkongor, Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Education Department & State Project Director, SEMAM (SSA), A. Marbaniang, Secretary, Health Department, Government of Meghalaya, Dr. Aloka Guha, Ex-chairperson, National Trust and Dr. Anupriya Chadha, Chief Consultant (IE), Technical Support Group, New Delhi also participated in the Workshop, besides representation from NERIE, NEHU & Commissioner of Disability, Govt. of Meghalaya.
It is expected that deliberations in the workshop will provide a meaningful and useful input for developing State-wise IE Action Plan and also to formulate appropriate monitoring systems to achieve the desired targets as per PAB (Project Approval Board) approvals.
