Meghalaya on high alert after Goalpara killings

Tura, Nov 04: The inhuman killing of 7 people in the district of Goalpara has made the situation very critical for the people of Assam and Meghalaya. Unidentified gunmen, believed to be from UALA, brutally shot dead six people of the Rabha community, leaving another 11 critical and fighting for their lives, of which one succumbed to his injuries. With the situation already very tense due to the ongoing agitations for exclusion from the upcoming Rabha-Hasong Council (RHAC) Elections, the killings have the potential of making the fight communal in nature.

HSPDP withdraws support to KHUDA over ILP impasse

SHILLONG, Nov 04: The Hills State Peoples’ Democratic Party (HSPDP), a ruling coalition partner of the Congress at the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), on Monday withdrew their support to the PN Syiem-led Executive Committee in solidarity with the ongoing statewide protest demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in state to check unabated influx.

Trespassing - a severe headache for city residents

SHILLONG, Nov 04: Trespassing is a common sight in the city. Be it one’s private residence, public office, government bungalow existing in between parallel lanes, streets, crisscrossed staircases, terrains et al people here don’t care about the privacy of the buildings they are trespassing while taking the shortcut. And besides trespassing, another ugly sight is every nook and corner of the city are home to unruly youth engaged in unproductive talking while blocking pedestrians’ path. The yearn of the city’s youth for such quiet “corners” cannot go unnoticed as it is easier to nab their activities given their omnipresence.

Meghalaya solemnly observes All Souls’ Day

SHILLONG, Nov 02: Thousands of Christian faithful from the Catholic denomination in Meghalaya observed the All Souls’ Day to pay homage to their ‘dear departed ones’ on Saturday.
All Souls Day is a special day where all the deceased and dear departed are remembered by the Roman Catholic Church and followers.

Minor domestic helper raped for over a year, accused absconding

TURA, Nov 04: In what can really be called a shameful and heinous act perpetrated, a resident of South West Garo Hills, Helwith Marak has been accused of raping a minor. The accused has been absconding ever since the FIR was filed.
According to the FIR, the accused had been continually raping a minor girl for more than a year and the issue only came to light after the girl became pregnant.

GNLA serves demand notes to all SGH district administration employees

Bridge remains incomplete even after 30 year in Williamnagar

WILLIAMANAGAR, Nov 02: It was expected to start sooner than later and finally it did. The 30 year old under-construction bridge in Warima, East Garo Hills, which was envisioned to provide a lifeline to the people of the town and connect with Williamnagar proper, the district headquarter, has finally crossed the delay threshold of the people.
The construction on the bridge was started in the month of December 1984 and still remains incomplete despite the problems faced by the people of the region.
