BAGHMARA, Nov 02: The demand note menace has been a long debated and known issue that has been keeping everyone on their toes. While all the militant outfits being guilty of indulging in the exercise that has made living in the region difficult, it is for the first time that the District Administration of South Garo Hills (SGH) have been served demand notes! And not just a few people within the office, it is the whole office that has been served the same!

Meghalaya solemnly observes All Souls’ Day

SHILLONG, Nov 02: Thousands of Christian faithful from the Catholic denomination in Meghalaya observed the All Souls’ Day to pay homage to their ‘dear departed ones’ on Saturday.
All Souls Day is a special day where all the deceased and dear departed are remembered by the Roman Catholic Church and followers.

Winter’s arctic spell summons garments of warmth

SHILLONG, Nov 02: The MTDF is perhaps contemplating whether to hold the annual Autumn Festival following latest criticism, but looking at the buying habits of the people here it is more than evident that winter has set in. The ongoing wintry cold weather spell is only assuring this habit of the people if not anything else. The city’s commercial hub is abuzz with demand for body warmer wears, socks, scarf, caps and other such ‘garments of warmth’ particularly associated with winter.

GHADC denies information under RTI, complaint filed to SCIC

TURA, Nov 01: In another startling revelation, the PIO of GHADC denied information sought under the ambit of RTI for elaborating the details under the Transport Budget for the yearly session of 2011-2012.
The denial was done in a one liner, with the PIO stating the denial of information due to the figure presented in the RTI not matching with the actual budget presented. However, on checking through the official budget session handbook, the numbers were a perfect match!

Bridge remains incomplete even after 30 year in Williamnagar

WILLIAMANAGAR, Nov 02: It was expected to start sooner than later and finally it did. The 30 year old under-construction bridge in Warima, East Garo Hills, which was envisioned to provide a lifeline to the people of the town and connect with Williamnagar proper, the district headquarter, has finally crossed the delay threshold of the people.
The construction on the bridge was started in the month of December 1984 and still remains incomplete despite the problems faced by the people of the region.

KHADC and state government on verge of passing bills on influx simultaneously

SHILLONG, Nov 01: The State Government on Friday began a consultative exercise to solicit views on the draft Tenancy Bill, incidentally, a somewhat similar legislation, the Village Administration Bill, 2013, is likely to be passed in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Monday.
The KHADC said that the Village Administration Bill’s objective would be to regulate and check influx, which again the Tenancy Bill is also intending to do. Sections of the KHADC bill are to maintain a register at the village level to oversee the population pattern, an aspect which is also being incorporated in the draft Tenancy Bill.

Call off agitations before dialogue: CM to Pro-ILP NGOs

Shillong, Nov 01: Even as Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has appealed to pro-ILP NGOs to take advantage of the ‘space’ provided for the public consultation process on the draft Meghalaya Regulation of Landlords and Verification of Tenants Bill, he, however, reiterated the state government’s stance that it would initiate “talks” with the agitating NGOs only if they stop all their agitational programmes.
