Tura, May 01: In yet another incident of the sordid state of crime against children, a case was lodged against one Poresh Hajong of the lower Dobasipara area for attempting to molest and rape a minor. The victim who was only seven years of age was allegedly molested by her next door neighbor Poresh, while she went there to play with other children of her locality.

KSU activists’ arrest leads to arson

SHILLONG, May 01: Unidentified miscreants on Wednesday afternoon burned down a government vehicle belonging to the forest department, which the police claimed was a backlash against the arrest of two KSU activists in relation to the case of vandalism during the Khasi Awakening Day on April 04 last.

Meghalaya Governor asks CMJ University to recall all degrees awarded

SHILLONG, April 30: Meghalaya Governor, RS Mooshahary who is also the Visitor to the CMJ University, has directed the University to recall/withdraw all the degrees awarded so far. He also issued a series of directions to the University and asked for the submission of compliance report within May 21, 2013 and said no fresh admission of students shall be undertaken by the University till compliance of all the instructions and till the appointment of the Chancellor is made in accordance with Act.

Goalpara erupts with violence, 3 people killed

Guwahati, April 29: At least three people were killed and 15 others injured, when police opened fire at a mob, which turned violent after recovering the body of one Taher Ali in Assam's Goalpara district on Monday, officials said.
The incident took place at Mailapathar area near Rakhyasini forest in district, where local people protested against the administration following an incident when the body of Ali (46) was recovered, who was missing since April 28.The mob turned violent and attacked the police personnel with sticks, stone and sharp weapons.

Meghalaya’s Power scenario to improve only by 2017: MeECL

SHILLONG, April 30: Maintaining that load-shedding would continue in the state, the Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MeECL) on Tuesday said the crisis would be eased with the commissioning of Tripura based Palatana thermal power project, wherein the state has 79 MW share.
Addressing a news conference here on Tuesday, MeECL Director (Generation), Elias Lyngdoh told reporters that the situation is expected to improve by 2017 with the government intending to commission more new projects both hydro power and thermal power project.

Shillong: Is it en-route to becoming Cancer City of NE

SHILLONG, April 30: Is Shillong going to be known as the Cancer City of the North East? A report says that 1038 cases of cancer ostensibly due to the use of tobacco products were recorded at one hospital alone.
The Supreme Court of India wanted to know why people in ‘the Abode of Clouds’ were still merrily partaking of harmful nicotine products, even though they are banned throughout India. Officials now say that they have got their act together, and that the ban will be put in effect soon.

BSNL plans to improve connectivity in NER

SHILLONG, April 29: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Monday said that it has come up with a programme aiming at improving the connectivity and reach out to remote rural areas in the North East Region (NER).
According to the Chief General Manager Telecom (CGMT), NE-1 Circle, DP Singh, the work for establishing more than 1300 Common Service Centres (CSCs) will be soon established in the region, as the work is progressing on a speedy pace.
