SHILLONG, Aug 10: Celebration of Independence Day in East Khasi hills district this year will be colorful, filled with fun, as the district administration has lined up variety of programmes for the people to come out and enjoy.
East Khasi hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal told reporters on Saturday, “The East Khasi hills district administration has geared up preparing for the celebration in a big and positive way to allow massive public involvement and participation on that day.”

NGT orders Meghalaya to ban sand mining within 90-days

SHILLONG, Aug 09: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday served 90 days deadline to Meghalaya government to immediately put an end to the rampant sand mining in state.
 “The State government should immediately put a stop to sand mining activities within 90 days,” Meghalaya People’s Environment Rights Forum (MPERF), President Naba Bhattarcharjee told reporters here.

GHSMC seeks inclusion of Assam’s Kamrup and Goalpara into ‘Garoland’

SHILLONG, Aug 09: The Garo Hills State Movement Committee (GHSMC), spearheading the demands for a separate Garo state, wants the inclusion of Kamrup and Goalpara districts of Assam in the proposed “Garoland”.
GHSMC president Augustine Marak said that the committee wants the two districts of Assam to be incorporated in Garoland as majority of the people living in these two districts belong to Garo community.

45 % candidates rejected due to mistakes in filing OMR sheets

SHILLONG, Aug 08: A whopping 45 percent candidates were rejected during recruitment as Armed Branch (AB) Constable in Meghalaya Police due to errors in filing their details in the Optical Magnetic Reader (OMR) answer sheets.
After clearing their Physical Examination Test (PET), a total of 10,322 candidates appeared for the written examination; 5661 or about 54 per cent passed the exam. But another 4653 candidates were rejected for different errors in filing the OMR.

2 ANVC (B) militants lynched by villagers in Assam

TURA, Aug 09: In another shocker for militancy within the region, two alleged ANVC (B) militants were lynched by people of the area which they visited along with 5 others to demand money. The incident comes just after a month or so when villagers of Bajengdoba area lynched two more ANVC (B) militants when they had come to threaten villagers of the area and demand money.

New organizations threatens to eliminate police if Nurul not arrested

Shillong, Aug 09: A new outfit/organization has been floated in Garo Hills yet again. It has been christened ‘Government of Garoland (garo)’.
In its first statement, the origination has warned of eliminating police personnel if the rape – accused cop Nurul Islam is not apprehended by August 15.

Pressure groups to up their ante for ILP implementation

SHILLONG, Aug 08: In their continued campaign for speedy implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state, Meghalaya’s pressure groups on Thursday said that they would hold a public meeting and a rally to Main Secretariat on August 16, to pressurize the government on the issue.
