Meghalaya’s fiscal health slides down the hill, reveals CAG

SHILLONG, April 18: The Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) has pointed out that the financial health of Meghalaya for the year for 2011-12 has deteriorated compared to the last four years.
The CAG report, which was tabled in the state assembly by Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on the last day of the Budget Session on Thursday, viewed the state fiscal position in terms of key parameters like revenue surplus, fiscal deficit and primary deficit.

Meghalaya Govt providing 85% grant-in-aid to private schools

Shillong, April 17: To ensure the growth and development of education in the state, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of education, Dr RC Laloo informed that the state government is spending 85 percent of the budgetary allocation as grant-in-aid to private schools and only 15 percent is being spent on government owned schools.

Govt issues revised Surrender-cum-Rehabilitation scheme for misguided youths

Ardent demands shifting of all Defence establishments from Shillong

SHILLONG, April 17: Citing problems of illegal encroachment by the Defence Authority, HSPDP legislator from Nongkrem, Ardent Basaiawmoit on Wednesday demanded the state government to “shift” all Defence establishments from the capital city.
“The problem of illegal encroachment by the Defence Authority has always taken place from time to time and as long as we allow their establishments to be in the residential areas of the city, these problems will keep on coming up,” Basaiawmoit told the Assembly.

District Administration, NGOs join hands to save Garo Hills greenery

Tura, April 17: NGOs and the District Administration in Garo Hills have decided to work together to save the greenery of the region. Alarmed at the rate of deforestation within the region, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi, has decided to launch a campaign to try and save as much of the forested areas as possible with the help of NGOs of Garo Hills.
Bakshi said he was aware of the mass felling of trees due to the traditional practices of the tribes.

Terror strikes US: Three killed, 144 injured in Boston bombings

BOSTON/WASHINGTON, April 16 (IANS): Three people, including an eight-year-old boy, were killed and 144 injured as terror revisited the US with two massive explosions targeting the Boston Marathon within 12 seconds of each other. President Barack Obama vowed that those responsible would feel the "full weight of justice".
The two successive blasts Monday afternoon rocked the finish line of the Boston Marathon, world's oldest annual marathon.
