SHILLONG, Aug 21: The coal town of Borsora has became the favorite rendezvous point for illegal immigrants, who turn up there for converting their illegal status into an Indian citizen, in collusion with both Indian and Bangladeshi agents.
The modus operandi is simple: first get into the town after sneaking into India and then procure a document which can stand as testimony of being an Indian citizen and the most favored document is a driver’s license. Needless to say, those entering into India from the Borsora area get the driver's license before sneaking in!
“In one hour a driver’s license can be procured in Borsora,” a person who is in the know – how of things said. The racket has been on for sometimes and security personnel are aware of it.
Tura, Aug 21: Another case of Army high handedness has come to the fore when two people, who were illegally detained by the Army in Assam for 23 days, were finally picked up by their family from Lakhipur police station. The two were picked up illegally on July 28 last and only released on August 19, a full 23 days after they were taken by the Army.
SHILLONG, Aug 20: Twelve persons have been arrested by police on charges of their involvement in the August 16 brutal killing of three persons who were allegedly branded as practitioner of witchcraft (menaiksuid or menshohnoh) at Smit village.
East Khasi hills SP M Kharkrang told reporters on Tuesday, “We have arrested twelve people all are relatives after they were found to have been involved in the recent murder of the three.” He said the arrest came after three females were picked up on Monday and based on their statements a police team led by SP (City) Vivek Syiem went in the wee hours of Tuesday and arrested nine others.
TURA, Aug 20: The state of infrastructure in Williamnagar has left a lot to be desired. The situation of road connectivity is so poor that since the last 30 years or more, the town itself has been broken up into two separate entities, with economy of the town being hit. Shillong, Aug 20: Suspected UALA militants lobbed a grenade inside a Wine store in South Garo Hills on Tuesday, injuring two people.
The incident occurred at about 11 am in the wine store belonging to one Chia N. Sangma, located at Jadigittim Bazar, 5 km from Nongalbibra under South Garo Hills.
