Umiam Lake – Appearances can be deceiving

Written by Meghalaya Times. Posted in Front Page

The Umiam or Barapani Lake seems to be filled to the brim suggesting that the huge loss of forest land has not really made a difference to the rains or the water content. However, experts are of the opinion that the amount of silt now deposited in the lake is almost one third of the lake itself; so what everyone’s looking at is a glass that is only two third filled. Appearances can be really deceiving.

Where is the Civic Sense

Written by Meghalaya Times. Posted in Front Page

This is the newly constructed side wall in the Circular Market in Tura. The structure is just about 3 months old. However, the hygiene here has been in a dismal and pitiable condition, showing the terrible civic sense of people. Cheap drink bottles, guthka masala, urine and sometimes even faeces lie about, making the place something of a puke spot. And to think this is in the centre of the town!
