New pope opens Holy Week at Vatican on Palm Sunday

Vatican City, March 24 (AP): Pope Francis celebrated his first Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square, encouraging people to be humble and young at heart, as tens of thousands joyfully waved olive branches and palm fronds.
The square overflowed with some 2,50,000 pilgrims, tourists and Romans eager to join the new pope at the start of solemn Holy Week ceremonies, which lead up to Easter, Christianity’s most important day.

Meghalaya's debt burden doubles in eight years, reaches Rs 5,380 crore

SHILLONG, March 24: The Congress led Meghalaya government has made provisions of development in the state annual budget but the state’s total debt burden has gradually increased, it has almost doubled in the last eight financial years.
In the financial year 2012-2013, the state’s total debt burden has reached Rs 5,380 crore, which is 29 percent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), revealed sources from RBI.

Education Scam: Teachers cry foul over delay in action on Court order

Tura, March 24: The movement against the Education Scam, which had an all pervading effect on the Meghalaya Government, is now gaining ground with more aggrieved aspirant teachers coming forward to speak out against the delay in justice being given to them.
Mentionably, the teachers had filed a writ petition in the Gauhati High Court due to which a CBI inquiry was undertaken. The findings of the CBI enquiry were submitted to the Court, which found a lot of anomalies on the part of the government in the allocation of teaching posts. The High Court then went ahead and advised the Government to quash the earlier appointments and reappoint those that were deserving of the posts.

SHILLONG, March 23: Matrilineal Meghalaya on Saturday made another landmark in its history with the first women Chief Justice (CJ) being sworn-in to head the full fledged State High Court situated in the capital city.
Justice T Meena Kumari was sworn-in as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court. Meghalaya Governor, Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary administered the Oath of Office and Secrecy to her at a ceremony held in the Raj Bhavan here on Saturday.
Justice Kumari is a judge of the Patna High court, and hails from Andhra Pradesh.

Yet another Gang Rape in Williamnagar

Williamnagar, March 24: Williamnagar has witnessed yet another gory gang rape when three – men assaulted and raped a mentally challenged girl.
The girl in question was not only mentally challenged, but also underage. The incident happened on the March 19 last and is the third in a row coming from the town, which is fast turning out to be dangerous for women.

RNTCPs - a life saver for TB patients

SHILLONG, March 23: In Meghalaya, the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) was launched on the October 2, 2003, in all the 7 districts. So far RNTCP has been able to play the role of a life saver for many patients in the aspect of physical cure and social upliftment. To commemorate World Tuberculosis Day and sensitize the masses about the curative methods, the RNTCP Meghalaya in association with CMAI, CBCI-CARD and Rotary Club Shillong organized a programme at the Don Bosco Youth Centre Shillong on Saturday.
