KSU demands halt of “Aadhaar” implementation in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, July 03: The KSU has demanded that the Meghalaya government must put on hold the implementation of the “Aadhaar” - a Unique Identification Number (UIN) scheme in the state and first take the opinions of the stakeholders and also put in place a mechanism for controlling influx into the state.
Led by its president Daniel Khyirem a delegation of the KSU met Meghalaya Home Minister Roshan Warjri on Wednesday and put the demand forward. According to the KSU leader the Home Minister has agreed to withhold the implementation of the UIN after inquiring about it from concerned authority as she is not aware of it.

NGOs decry death of innocent people, ask for security

TURA, July 03: The recent gruesome murder of a young boy and an elderly teacher has shaken the foundation of the people of the region. The act was decried by all sections of people of the region and loud discussions were held to see if there was a solution for the problem at hand and ways to rectify the current crisis. NGOs of the region have spoken in unison about what they thought was not excusable and wanted ask the administration as to how much more the people of the region would have to wait for protection.

Govt to create separate district wings for effective PMGSY implementation

SHILLONG, July 02: After showing much tardiness, Meghalaya finally seems to have decided to fall in-line with the guidelines of PMGSY scheme for its effective implementation.
After the scheduled time – period for completion of the said scheme has reached half mark (two and an half year), Meghalaya PWD Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar, on Tuesday announced that the State Government is considering creating separate wings for the State districts for speedy implementation of PMGSY scheme.

Former Delhi Police Chief is Meghalaya’s new Governor

Shillong, July 01: Former Delhi Police Commissioner, Dr Krishan Kant Paul, has been appointed the new Meghalaya Governor. He will be taking over as Meghalaya Governor from RS Mooshahary.
This was announced by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday.
Dr Paul is the husband of Omita Paul, Principal Secretary to the President.

Mooshahary wants CM Jha arrested

SHILLONG, July 02: Outgoing Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary has stressed that the absconding CMJ University Chancellor CM Jha must be traced and arrested. Even as the state CID has failed to arrest Jha, the Governor told reporters on Tuesday, “He (Jha) should have been caught, that is what I feel.”

Surprise joint checking conducted, 5 picked – up in Tura

Together with district administration, many NGO leaders, church leaders and South Tura MLA took a round allover Tura checking for drunken driving and drinking in public places besides other anti – social activities taking place.

Bangladesh to hand over ULFA leader Anup Chetia to India

Shillong, July 01 (IANS): United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) general secretary Anup Chetia, who has been in a Bangladeshi jail since 1997, would be repatriated this month to India, a senior union home ministry official said Monday.
"He (Chetia) should be reptratriated to India by July 15 or a few days before that," Shambhu Singh, joint secretary (northeast) in the Union Home Ministry, said.
