SHILLONG, April 10: The division within the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) over the decision to terminate Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait, niece of the party’s supremo Hoping Stone Lyngdoh, from the party membership for supporting United Democratic Party (UDP) MP nominee Paul Lyngdoh became apparent with the veteran party leader said he was not aware about it and the decision did not have his approval.
The HSPDP had decided to support Independent candidate PBM Basaiawmoit instead of Paul Lyngdoh, whose party is part of the North East Regional Forum, as its party vice president Ardent Basaiawmoit had publicly stated that the UDP candidate would lose the election.
Moradabad, April 10 (IANS): In remarks that raised a storm, Samajwadi Party (SP) Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday said the death penalty in rape cases was "unfair" as boys make "mistakes".
At a Lok Sabha election rally in Moradabad, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister told the gathering that if his party leads the government at the Centre, he would change the law.
"Ladkon se aisi galtiyan ho jaati hain to iska ye matlab nahin ki phaansi de di jaye (Boys do make such mistakes but that does not mean that they should be sent to the gallows)," he said.
SHILLONG, April 10: The State registered a total turnout of voters for the Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats during Tuesday’s parliamentary election up to 69.03 percent even as the EVMs have been sealed and are kept inside the strong rooms under tight security.
“The overall turnout of voters is 69.03 per cent, five per cent more than the 2009 parliamentary election which was only 64 per cent,” Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Prashant Naik told reporters here.
SHILLONG, April 09: Of the total 15.67 lakh voters, around 66 percent turned-out on Wednesday to cast their votes to elect the new members for the 16th Lok Sabha from Meghalaya two parliamentary constituencies – Shillong and Tura, an increase by two percent from last MP election.
The conduct of election also passed off peacefully despite the 12-hour bandh call by proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) in Khasi and Jaintia hills and heightened militants activities in the five districts of Garo hills.
Polling in all the 2562 polling booths across Meghalaya was held from 7 am to 5 pm.
“Around 66 percent voters turnout has been recorded but the percentage is likely to change once poll reports from far-flung areas of the state pours in,” Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Naik told reporters here.

The eleven year old child who is now under the care of the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) is eleven years old and was allegedly raped by one Periglesh Momin, a teacher in the Khardang Babupara Non Government Lower Primary School since she was six years old.

Tura, April 09: The Indian National Congress (INC) on the last day of campaigning lodged a complaint against the National People’s Party (NPP) leader and Tura seat contestant, Purno A Sangma for calling the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma ‘Chairman of all militant groups’ on April 7 last. The party decided to lodge a complaint owing to the fact that the statement was made repeatedly in all of the election rallies of veteran leader.
In a letter to the Election Commission of India, the Congress team raised the issue.
