Mahindra Adventure Season 3 kick starts with Shillong Great Escape

Shillong, May 15: The 101th edition of the Mahindra Great Escape, one of India’s most popular off-roading adventures, will be held in Meghalaya with 4WD vehicles from the Mahindra stable maneuvering the challenging route. The event is scheduled to flag off on May 25 at 9:00 am from Orchid Lake resort, Umiam, Ri Bhoi district Shillong.
The 1st Mahindra Great Escape of the season will see Mahindra customers from Shillong, Tura, Jaintia hills, Guwahati, Nagaland and other neighboring north east states of India  participating in the event.

35,000 BPL families enroll for MHIS in first week

Shillong, May 14: Over 35,000 BPL workers/ families have enrolled themselves for the Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) in Meghalaya in the first week of the launch of the scheme here.
The scheme was launched in the state on May 1, 2013 under the aegis of Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY). Meghalaya government is implementing the scheme in collaboration with the ICICI Lombard General Insurance.

Ampareen takes up minor’s rape case with Home Minister

SHILLONG, May 14: Following the recent rape of a seven-year old at Malki, a delegation of the Seng Longkmie Kharmalki, Malki led by Urban Minister and local MLA, Ampareen Lyngdoh on Tuesday called upon the State Home Minister Roshan Warjri to take stiff measures against such crimes.
Terming the rape case as mysterious, Lyngdoh sought the cooperation from all sections of the society to nab the culprits of this heinous crime and prevent such incidences from occurring in near future.

GNLA tries to extort Rs 5 lakh from MLA

Shillong, May 14 (IANS): The outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) have threatened to kill Meghalaya Congress legislator Limison D. Sangma if he fails to pay Rs.5 lakh extortion money, police said on Tuesday.
"We have been informed that Sangma has received an extortion note in the form of a text message. We are looking into it," said Director General of Police Prem Singh.

Balpakram - Pachyderms’ paradise left in ruins

Baghmara, May 14: One of the most beautiful places on Earth, the elephant reserve of Balpakram has been suffering for quite a few years due to the shoddy handling of the national park. Already ear-marked internationally as one of the last few preserves of the Asian elephant, with a very healthy count of elephants, the park has been suffering as it struggles to manage 220+ sq kms of forests as finances have dried up for the up-keep of the park itself.
