KHADC passes resolution for implementation of ILP

SHILLONG, Oct 25: An official resolution was passed in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Thursday urging the Governor, Tathagata Roy to apply the provisions of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in areas falling under the Council’s jurisdiction.
Accordingly, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Inner Line as adapted from the Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873) Regulation Bill, 2018 was also introduced by the KHADC chief Hispreaching Son Shylla during the first day of the two-day special session held on Thursday.

Meghalaya to house one of India’s best sports stadiums

SHILLONG, Oct 25: Meghalaya will be home to one of the country’s five National Sports Stadiums of international standard for differently-abled before the year 2022 as per what the Union Minister, for Social Justice and Empowerment, Thaawarchand Gehlot said here on Thursday.
Gehlot said that the Ministry intends to set up national sports stadium in five states across the country for the differently abled and Meghalaya is one of the states. He said that this was decided after the Chief Minister of the State approached him with a proposal and also that he provided 50 acres of land for the same.

Questions raised after lawyer helps wife get Garo status

TURA, Oct 25: The recent alleged murder by a lawyer of his wife has raised many questions in terms of how many in the region have been taking advantage of the system and transforming themselves from a Non Garo to a Garo just for benefits.
Jahirul Islam Sarkar, a lawyer by profession as well as the gaonbura of Patharkata as well as the principal of the Patharkata Govt Aided HS School, was accused of murdering his wife after she was found hanging from the fan of the room in which he was present on October 1. While the lawyer is absconding since the incident, his circumvention of law, which allowed his deceased second wife to be declared a Garo has opened a completely new ‘Pandora’s Box’.

DMCH doctors help remove 22 kg ovarian tumour in Tura

TURA, Oct 25: In a first of its kind in Garo Hills, a 22 kg ovarian tumour was removed from a patient by a group of doctors at the District Maternity and Child Hospital at Tura in West Garo Hills. The tumour was removed from a 23 year patient who hailed from Baghmara in South Garo Hills.
While tumours in the range of 8-10 kgs are removed on a regular basis at the DMCH, this is the first time that a tumour of this range was removed successfully.

KHADC tables Lineage Amendment Bill

SHILLONG, Oct 25: Seeking to curb mixed marriages among Khasi women and taking the surname of the father’s clan, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Thursday introduced the KHAD (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (First Amendment) Bill, 2018.
Tabling the Bill during the special session held here, KHADC chief executive member Hispreaching Son Shylla said, “It has become necessary to further strengthen the Khasi Social Customs of Lineage by way of codification of Khasi customary laws for effective implementation of the KHAD (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Act, 1997 and hence this amendment Bill.”

Lawyer accused of murdering wife absconds

TURA, Oct 25: The lawyer, Jahirul Islam Sarkar, who has been accused of murdering his wife and then hanging her body from a ceiling to show that it was a suicide case has gone into hiding even before the post mortem report of his wife is provided to the police.
Dejected by the slow pace of the police investigation which allowed the lawyer to abscond, the family of the victim (Rezia Sultana) has moved Court seeking either a CID inquiry or one conducted by the CBI into the case.

Meghalaya’s first CM remembered on his 28th Death Anniversary

TURA, Oct 25: Meghalaya, particularly the Garo Hills region remembered the first CM of the state, Capt Williamson Sangma, through various programs organized on Thursday in many places across the region on the occasion of his 28 death anniversary. The former CM was remembered through grand functions held in his honour across Garo Hills.
In Tura, the function held at 10 am in his honour, was held at the GHADC compound and saw the presence of the acting DC, AM Sangma, the SP Dr MGR Kumar, all members of the EC of the GHADC among others. Home minister James PK Sangma was the chief guest for the occasion at Tura.
