Justice T Meena Kumari being sworn-in as first Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court

SHILLONG, March 23: Matrilineal Meghalaya on Saturday made another landmark in its history with the first women Chief Justice (CJ) being sworn-in to head the full fledged State High Court situated in the capital city.
Justice T Meena Kumari was sworn-in as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court. Meghalaya Governor, Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary administered the Oath of Office and Secrecy to her at a ceremony held in the Raj Bhavan here on Saturday.
Justice Kumari is a judge of the Patna High court, and hails from Andhra Pradesh.

Mukul presents Rs 4,141 crore Budget with Rs 526 crore deficit

SHILLONG, March 22: Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Friday tabled a Plan Budget of Rs 4,141 crore for the fiscal year 2013 – 14, with a fiscal deficit of Rs 526 crore, but has levied no fresh taxes except increasing royalty on coal.
The proposed Plan Budget of Rs 4,141 crore includes loan components of Rs 798.5 crore, externally -aided component of Rs 405.5 crore and the 13th Finance Commission award of Rs 116.42 crore.
Of the budgetary outlay, 26.43 percent of the allotment is earmarked for social services sector, 19.90 percent for the power sector, 10.34 percent for the transport sector and 9.36 percent of the allocation is earmarked for agriculture and allied activities, 6.47 percent for irrigation and 4.88 percent for rural development programmes.

UDP demands enhancement of scholarship amount for students from border

SHILLONG, March 22: United Democratic Party (UDP) Chief and Shella legislator, Dr Donkupar Roy from the Opposition bench on Friday demanded for enhancement of amount of scholarship to students from the border areas in view of the increase in costs of books and house rents.

RNTCPs - a life saver for TB patients

SHILLONG, March 23: In Meghalaya, the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) was launched on the October 2, 2003, in all the 7 districts. So far RNTCP has been able to play the role of a life saver for many patients in the aspect of physical cure and social upliftment. To commemorate World Tuberculosis Day and sensitize the masses about the curative methods, the RNTCP Meghalaya in association with CMAI, CBCI-CARD and Rotary Club Shillong organized a programme at the Don Bosco Youth Centre Shillong on Saturday.

NPP demands ‘House-Committee’ to address power woes of Garo Hills

SHILLONG, March 22: With Garo hills plunging into darkness frequently, the Nationalist People’s Party (NPP) has demanded the government to constitute a ‘House-Committee’ to take up steps to rectify and identify the root-cause and address the problems accordingly.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, NPP Working President and former Leader of Opposition, Conrad K Sangma said, “We want the House-Committee to be set up to look into the various aspects of the MeECL so that it can run in a proper manner.”
