Hoobastank to perform in Shillong

SHILLONG, June 07: Hoobastank, an American based rock band from California, is all set to put the stage on fire on June 29 at Polo ground.
The event is being organized to celebrate the sixth anniversary of city-based magazine 'The North East Today'.
Best known for their hit number 'The reason' in 2003, the band was formed in 1994 and initially started with playing gigs very often.
The band now has Doug Robb as lead vocals, Dan Estrin as lead guitar, Chris Hesse at drums, backing vocals and Jesse Charland as the bass, backing vocals.

GNLA – Police engage in brief gun-battle

Shillong, June 07: Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants on Friday had yet another narrow escape after engaging in a brief exchange of fire with Meghalaya police in East Garo Hills.
Sources informed that the encounter took place at about 12.30 pm when a joint team of Meghalaya’s SWAT and CRPF’s CoBRA commandoes were returning after raiding the camp of GNLA C-in-C Sohan D Shira. Though the police team found nothing as the militants had left the said camp just before the arrival of the Police, it was when they were returning.

KSU, FKJGP stir – up ILP demand to ‘keep out’ doubtful citizens

SHILLONG, June 06: Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and Federation of Khasi – Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) on Thursday demanded the state government to consider the recommendation of the High Level Committee on Influx (HLCI) on implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to keep “doubtful citizens” out of the state.

Meghalaya’s female Everest climber to get double promotion

Shillong, June 06 (PTI): Wansuk Myrthong, woman constable from Meghalaya, would get double promotion for becoming the first tribal Khasi woman to scale Mt Everest.
The woman constable was a member of the first North-East India Everest Expedition team, which scaled the peak recently.
“We propose to reward her appropriately for this feat,” Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said.

SHILLONG, June 07: Shillong is an ideal place for institutions driven towards capacity building, opined Union HRD Minister Dr. M.M. Pallam Raju during his maiden visit after holding the HRD portfolio since its inception at IIM Shillong on Friday, while urging students to become the objective repository that is needed by Government and planners.
Interacting with the participants at IIM, Dr. Raju said, “You are in such a lovely environment that you can focus and utilize the facilities of the campus to the best of your capabilities. It is an attractive campus to invite faculty, retain faculty, invite visiting professors, invite distinguishes guest lecturers.”

Breather for aggrieved CMJ University students

SHILLONG, June 06: In a breather for aggrieved students of the CMJ University, the Director of Higher and Technical Education (DHTE) on Thursday issued an order saying that the department will examine the feasibility of accommodating the students of the University, which has been shutdown, in other institutions.
