KHADC presents deficit budget of Rs 27,610 for 2013-14

SHILLONG, June 18: The Budget session of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) got underway on Tuesday with the Chief Executive Member (CEM) PN Syiem presenting a deficit budget of Rs 27,610 for 2013-14.
“The total estimated budget of Rs 88,22,39,630 is however higher than  the expected revenue to be generated by the council which is a only Rs 88,22,12,020,” Syiem said while placing the Budget before the House here.

Poultry vendors on week-long strike from today

Shillong, June 18: Poultry vendors, especially those dealing with broiler chicken, in Iewduh (bara bazaar) have called for one-week strike to protest the increased rate of the farm chicken with effect from Wednesday (June 19).
From Wednesday onwards, for an entire week, one will not find broiler chicken being sold in Iewduh.

Dr Donkupar Roy is Meghalaya’s Leader of Opposition

Shillong, June 17: United Democratic Party (UDP) President Dr. Donkupar Roy has been recognized as the Leader of Opposition (LO) in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker, AT Mondol on Monday issued a notification recognizing Dr Roy as the Leader of Opposition in the 60- member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly with effect from June 17, 2013.

Domestic Workers’ Day is no ‘special day’ for domestic workers

SHILLONG, June 17: While the entire world celebrated ‘International Domestic Workers’ Day’ on Sunday, for many workers in the city it was yet another day with no change in their daily routine, while serving their masters, respectively.
One 19 year old Shimra Sangma, who hails from Western part of the state, who was shabbily dressed, was witnessed sweeping a verandah in the early hours of the day.
Speaking to Meghalaya Times, Sangma who knows very little Hindi, shared experiences of her life.

High alert sounded in East Garo Hills after powerful blast

Shillong, June 17: A day after the Garo Hills based militant outfit on Sunday lobbed a local – made bomb, suspected to be Improvised Explosive Device (IED), in East Garo Hills capital Williamnagar, the state police deployed in the district have been placed under high alert and combing operations are being carried out in the adjacent areas.
Speaking to Meghalaya Times, DIG (Operations), GHP Raju downplayed the nature and intensity of bomb saying it was a crude bomb, which was lobbed at residential police colony on Sunday night.

Powerful blast rattles Williamnagar

Shillong, June 16: A powerful bomb blast on Sunday night shook the Williamnagar town in East Garo Hills. The intensity of the blast was such that the sound could be heard well outside the periphery of the town.
