Public anger bursts out; one killed, curfew imposed in Tura

Shillong, June 21: The sweltering anger against the rising rapes in Garo Hills, especially in the light of recent Ampati rape case, burst out on Friday evening against three people, who are accused of attempting to rape a mentally unstable girl. The vent out was so fierce that it left two people dead and several injured.
Infuriated mob of about 800- 900 on Friday night took siege of Tura Civil Hospital after learning of the accused being treated there. This compelled the district administration to impose curfew in Tura town and sound high alert in all the police stations in the district.

KHADC toll gate collects only Rs 500 in a year

SHILLONG, June 21: Only rupees five hundred has been collected by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in a year from one of its toll gates set up at 14th Mile Northern Ranges in Ri Bhoi district despite of having more than 15 employees.
This was informed by the Executive Member (EM) in – charge of Finance, Lamphrang Blah in his reply to a query raised by Nongthymmai MDC Latiplang Kharkngor during the Question Hour at the Budget Session on Friday.

Governor appeals for Biometric Enrolment of National Population Register

Shillong, June 21: Meghalaya Governor, Ranjit S. Mooshahary with his family on Friday completed the Biometric Enrolment under National Population Register (NPR) and has expressed pride to be part of the great national exercise.
He also appeal to all the Residents of Meghalaya to come forward for their Biometric Enrolment in their respective Biometric Camps on the scheduled date and time and fully cooperate with the enrolment functionaries to make the programme a grand success in the State.

30 power cuts per day, FKJGP threatens agitation

Tura, June 20: Angered by the frequent power cuts within the town of Phulbari, the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Phulbari Circle, has threatened to start an agitation if the situation is not rectified. With electricity being more absent than present through the day, the town of Phulbari has been left in darkness for most of the day and night.

CMJ University controversy affected credibility of Meghalaya’s other private universities

SHILLONG, June 21: The recent controversy over Chandra Mohan Jha (CMJ) University has impacted other private universities established in Meghalaya, admitted a Chancellor from another university here on Friday.
William Carrey University (WCU) Chancellor prof Ken Gnanakan said the credibility of private universities in the state have been questioned because of the recent controversial episode of one of the university.

Adelbert has issues against Garos living in Khasi Hills: ANVC(B)

Shillong, June 20: The ANVC(B) has expressed ‘shock’ and condemned KHNAM MDC Adelbert Nongrum’s statement that Garos should be barred from taking part in KHADC polls, while implying that the statement demeans the presence of Garos in Khasi Hills.
“How could Nongrum raise such sensitive issue hurting the sentiments of the Garos, specially those living in Khasi Hills,” asked ANVC(B) Publicity Secretary, Doang D. Shira through a press communiqué on Thursday stressing that “Nongrum made it a point that he has issues against Garos living in Khasi Hills.”

Mukul wants ‘Bio - digester toilet technology’ for Meghalaya

SHILLONG, June 20: Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has suggested signing of an MoU between Meghalaya government, DRDO, CIPS and FICCI as implementing partner in the “bio - digester toilet technology” after a presentation was made before him on Wednesday by the DRDO in Delhi.
The DRDO has come up with an innovative technology for sanitation which can replace the conventional septic-tank model of sanitation by innovative bio-digester tanks using anaerobic micro-organism which is superior but cheaper than the septic-tank model.
