Nongstoin, Mar. 13:
The press tour organized by the State Directorate of Information and Public Relations to West Khasi Hills, led by Assistant Director C. Passah to Laitkseh village to witness government department schemes introduced to villagers.
At the tour, the media from the city observed that development is yet to progress as officers appointed to several departments have a tough job implementing development through instructions and other techniques to the public.
At Laitkseh which is under Mawthadraishan C&RD Block office, the people along with officers and the V.E.C earlier worked hard to complete the road construction of the approach road from PWD road to Thungkhnai and Umlyngpoi within 18 days as per the order of the scheme of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). The roads’ length was 1.6 km and 1.1 km and the retaining wall, 60 metres. The scheme was sanctioned with a total amount of Rs four lakh for the 1.6 km stretch of road and Rs 3.2 lakh for the 1.1 km road. The people benefited properly from the scheme as they came together for its realization, BDO F.M Kharsyntiew said.
Young and old alike came together to avail of the scheme as they received Rs 100 per day. The job card with a validity of five years was availed of by 249 villagers, Kharsyntiew added.
The scheme was also distributed transparently with all participants knowing what amount of money had been sanctioned for them to develop their area.
Senior residents of about 72 years of age, said that they were not looking for the money but for development.
They also expressed gratitude to the govt for generating the scheme and urged them to do more especially for govt schools.
Interestingly, on the involvement of the local MLA in terms of development, the villagers said that he is rarely seen, barring during elections.
