SHILLONG, mar. 04:
The 15-day long handloom and handicraft market kicked off in the city here on Thursday. The fair was inaugurated by Cooperation Minister Paul Lyngdoh at All Saints Cathedral.
There are a total of 25 stalls being displayed.
The handicraft fair is being organised by the Meghalaya Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Cooperative Federation Limited (MAHWHCFL) through the sponsorship of the Development Commissioner for Handloom, Government of India, Ministry of Textiles.
General manager, MAHWHCFL, SK Dey, said that the fair is being held to bring about closeness among local weavers to enable them to develop ideas of making handicraft materials.
“This is part of an interaction among the weavers from different areas state and those from outside and thus will enable them to develop techniques for improving their handicraft profession,” Dey said.
He said that the products were expected to see a turnover of Rs three lakh.
The local participants are from all over the district of the state. Four states will also be participating including Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura and Manipur and are expected to arrive by Friday, Dey said.
This is the second time that MAHWHCFL has organised a handicraft event in the state.
