Staff Reporter SHILLONG, Feb. 25: Sending a strong signal that no one is above the law, a police official has been convicted of rape. The District and Session Judge on Wednesday sentenced a sub-inspector to 10 years imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000. John R Marak, Sub-Inspector with the Meghalaya Police had raped a woman at a city hotel in September, 2006. Based on the investigation gathered by three officers, B Lyngkhoi, KR Marak and Usha Sinha from Sadar Police Station, former colleagues of the sub-inspector, the court was finally able to convict Marak. “Nobody is above the law, criminals are criminals irrespective of their position,” a senior police official said. A police official said that Marak was put under suspension after the registration of the case in 2006 and a termination letter addressed to him has been dispatched.
