International sustainability conference to be held

SHILLONG, Dec. 06:

IIM Shillong will host the international conference on Sustainability: Management and Beyond’ (SusCon) from December 8-10 in association with John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, Canada.


IIM Shillong conducts a week-long foundation course on sustainability for its first year students every year.

This year, the chief guest for the conference is Padma Vibhushan Sunderlal Bahuguna, Gandhian, environmentalist and founder of Chipko Movement. KC Malick, founder chairman of non governmental organisation, Bharat Integrated Social Welfare Agency (BISWA), will be the special guest.

Nearly 30 research papers will be presented in eight parallel sessions. Some of the foreign delegates are Paul Srivastava, director, David O’Brien Centre for Sustainable Enterprise, Canada; Uriel Leviatan, chair, University of Haifa, Israel; Mary Gentile, consultant to Aspen Institute, and former professor, Business Ethics, Harvard Business School, USA.

It may be mentioned that this is the first annual international conference on sustainability initiated by an IIM. It is considered to be the brain child of Professor Swapan Kumar Majumdar, chair SusCon, IIM Shillong. The institute will be hosting the conference every year.

The conference will hope to lay the stepping stone for embracing the thoughts and ideas of intellectuals and activists and actions and policies of organisations and NGOs towards sustainability movement.

Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma, will host the banquet dinner in support of the ethos and philosophy of sustainability that IIM Shillong believes in.
