NONGSTOIN, July. 29:
The Mawthadraishan Farmers and Cattle Farming Welfare Organization (MFCFWO) through a Right to Information application of the District Agriculture Officer, West Khasi Hills, has found that out of the Rs 3.72 lakh sanctioned by the state government through the department for West Khasi Hills, the DAO through a supplier of chemical fertilizer (MeCOFED), has spent only Rs 1,03,280 for the whole district.
Rs 31,015 has been spent for Nongstoiñ District Head Quarter, Mairang Sub-Division - Rs 26, 410 and Mawkyrwat Sub-Division - Rs 45, 855. The organisation added that the DAO has returned an amount of Rs 2,68,720 to the state government.
The DAO, West Khasi Hills, E. Wahlang, said that the distribution of chemical fertilizers in the district is lagging behind compared to other districts as the supplier is unable to distribute or supply medicines to farmers as sanctioned.
It may be reminded that around 70 percent of the people in West Khasi Hills are cultivators. Many have not received even a single bit of the chemical fertilizer from the amount sanctioned.
Meanwhile, the organisation also expressed surprise over the meager amount sanctioned and said that more initiatives should be taken in this regard.
It has also demanded that the suppliers be fired and new ones be appointed so that distribution of fertilizers can be facilitated better.
It is learnt that only 19 dealers have been recognized for the Nongstoin District Head Quarter in distributing chemical fertilizers. In this regard, the MF&CFWO has demand the government to increase more sanctioned amounts for fertilizer distribution schemes for the welfare of the farmers in West Khasi Hills.
