Shillong, Nov 25: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong hosted a 5.6 Kms ‘Run for Shillong’ on Friday morning the 25th November, 2016 to pave the way for IIM Shillong’s flagship event, the Golf Cup.
This year the event has Meghalaya Tourism as its title sponsors. With Minnie, the hill Mynah earlier inaugurated by Dr. Mukul Sangma Chief Minister of Meghalaya, as this season’s mascot, it looks to put the spotlight squarely on all that Shillong and the North-East has to offer.

The run was flagged off by Ms. Wansuk Myrthong, the first woman from the state of Meghalaya to successfully scale the majestic peak of Mt. Everest. An exhilarated Ms Myrthong encouraged the participants saying “If you want to succeed, you have to try again and again. You need to keep pushing.” Scores of participants led the way from IIM Shillong to the scenic surroundings of Ward’s Lake, located in the centre of the city.
The event was meant to bring together participants from both the local community as well as the student fraternity from premier institutes of the region such as NIFT, NIT and NEIGRIHMS and among others. The student community ran shoulder to shoulder in a celebration of the spirit of camaraderie and put up a show of unity. Amongst the men, Emphias Nongrum from Malki finished in the top spot with Albert Diengdoh from Mawkyrwat finishing second and Batsingstar K. Joahrin from Sngap Syiem College finishing third.
In the female category, Kyntiman Marwein secured the first position. Amongst the students, it was Piyush Jain and Pratibha Sapra who won the race in their categories, both from IIM Shillong. As one of the participants put it, “It was a very nice experience as the people from across Shillong came together to spread awareness about fitness and its importance”.
The long hours put in by the student organising committee bore fruit as Bhagyashree, one of the organising team members, said, “It was wonderful to see Shillong on the streets, up and running. We were successful in connecting with the local community and various colleges in Shillong. This helped foster a community spirit.” As the event galvanised the larger community and boosted spirits, it served as the start to an even bigger extravaganza in the form of the 9th season of the IIM Shillong Golf Cup to be held on the 26th & 27th of November. Organized on the green carpets of the Shillong Golf Course which stands proud as one of the oldest golf courses in Asia, this year’s event is poised to be even bigger and grander with Mahindra KUV100, Indian Oil and UBI as Associate Sponsors, News 18 as the Media Sponsor and CPGE as the Hospitality Partner to the event.
The organisation of a plenary session with corporate stalwarts, academicians and students to discuss the socio-economic impact of Demonetisation will propel the industry-academia knowledge transfer on today’s pressing issue. The 9th season of the prestigious event will be inaugurated early morning on Saturday. Major industry leaders from leading companies such as Goldman Sachs, Wipro,  Axis Bank, Titan and Accenture along with esteemed government officials will be participating in the tournament. The two day event will come to an end on Sunday evening with the award felicitation ceremony as an exciting line up of events and golfing extravagance takes shape under the aegis of IIM Shillong Golf Cup 2016.
