Free medical camp on April 24

SHILLONG, Apr 17: A free medical camp will be organized by Bharat Sevashram Sangha (BSS), a worldwide philanthropic and charitable organization, at the Medical Unit of its Ashram campus at Jail Road on April 24 from 9 A.M. onwards. Dr MM Malakar, MD (Medicine) and Dr Alok Deb, (Gynecology & Obstetrics) will attend patients at the camp and BSS will supply medicines to patients on the basis of the duos diagnosis and treatment. Registration for the camp is open till April 22 at the BSS Medical Unit.

Militants kill two soldiers in Manipur

Imphal, April 14 (IANS): Two soldiers have been killed in separate attacks by militants in Manipur, officials said on Thursday. Two others are battling for their lives.
While Major Amit Deswal died in a gun battle with tribal militants in Tamenglong district, one of the three soldiers of Assam Rifles wounded in a blast has succumbed to injuries. He was identified as Vijendra Yadav.
Both deaths took place late on Wednesday. Major Deswal was from the 21 Special Force of Rashtriya Rifles and hailed from Haryana. Yadav was a resident of Rajasthan.

Centre finally intervenes in Manipur bills row

New Delhi, April 14 (IANS): The Centre has finally intervened in the controversy arising out of three bills passed by the Manipur state assembly in August last year that resulted in violence and the death of nine youths in the hills of the northeastern state.
However, it is not the union home ministry, but the tribal welfare ministry that has written to Manipur's social welfare department seeking information and action taken in the aftermath of the passing of the bills.
After the union tribal welfare ministry sent a letter on March 17, the state's social welfare department asked the home department for information "since the action is related to your department".

NEHU Observes 125th Birth Anniversary of Ambedkar

SHILLONG, April 14: The 125th birth anniversary of Dalit icon and architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr B R Ambedkar was observed at the North-Eastern Hill University on Thursday at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Hall. Conducted by the Department of Political Science, the programme saw a lively discussion on the contributions of the Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer.  Some of his famous quotes were seen dotting the walls of the hall.
The programme was chaired by Dr. H. Srikanth from the Department of Political Science and attended by the officiating Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A.C. Mohapatra, teachers, students and staff.

RKM holds 2nd round of clothes distribution

SHILLONG, April 14: Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, Kolkata, through its Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama (RKM) at Cherrapunjee (Sohra) held the second round if its garment distribution programme on Thursday to at Ladmawphlang region, East Khasi Hills District. This, like the previous one held on April 12, was also done in collaboration with ITC Limited (Headquarter at Kolkata), as a part of Corporate Social Resonsibility (CSR) scheme of the latter.
