Shillong, Nov 23: Former Assistant President of International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Phrang Roy said there has been a misconception of looking at the jhum (shifting) cultivators with pity, as they do not use the modern method of cultivation including the use of fertilizers.
Roy said the indigenous (tribal) jhum cultivators use their own knowledge and wisdom to cultivate between forty and fifty crops. He said these cultivators do have the expertise to grow which type of crop that would suit a particular climate.
Roy, who was born and brought up in the indigenous matrilineal family of Shillong, informed that he was an IAS of Maharashtra cadre and there is the tendency of the bureaucracy to thrust things from top to the bottom and realized very late in life about the availability of so much wisdom at the grassroots.
Shillong, Nov 22: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills District, Shillong in collaboration with the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Ministry of Home Affairs, conducted training programme on Urban Risk Mitigation and Management from November 19 – 22 in NEHU Guest House, Mawlai Mawkynroh Shillong.
The topics covered in these four days were: Urban risk and Live demonstration of earthquakes and related phenomena; Disaster management kit- do’s and don’ts; Rapid Visual Screening (RVS)- methodology ; Vulnerability and its interaction with Ecosystem; Structural and Nonstructural mitigation of EQ & damages; Earthquakes – a vulnerability check of built environment in Shillong; Road widening problems & Landslides mitigation by bio-engineering; Various Landslides mitigation techniques; Nonstructural mitigation; Seismic micro-zonation for Shillong and Post earthquake medical emergency management.
Shillong, Nov 22: Bishop Heber College (Autonomous), Thiruchirappalli, Tamilnadu and Albert Einstein Science Institute, Shillong has jointly organized the “North Eastern Regional Workshop on Environmental Service Learning, conservation of Hotspots of Biodiversity and Ecotourism” in Shillong for NE institutions of higher education.
The Workshop is being held at St. Anthony’s College, Shillong from Since November 21 and concludes on Friday.
Shillong, Nov 21: One city - based businessman has been abducted by unidentified miscreants recently.
Sources informed that one Dilip Moore, who deals in wood business, was kidnapped three – days back while he was on his way to Shillong from Umiam. He stays at Mawbah in Shillong.
Sources added that a ransom has also been demanded for his release, but the amount is not yet known, neither the group behind the kidnapping.
Shillong, Nov 21: Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India, held a state level painting competition on ground water conservation, Meghalaya 2012 and prizes were distribute at Anton Hall, Don Bosco Point, laitumkrah, shillong on Wednesday.
The theme was "replete ground water before it deplete".
The painting competition was open for the students of 4th, 5th and 6th standards in three stages, namely school, state and national level. The winners of the first, second and third prize in the state level competition from each of the state will be invited to participate in the National Painting competition to be organized by CGWB at New Delhi on January 21, 2013.
Minister of Education, Dr RC Laloo, graced the occasion as Chief Guest.
