Locals unhappy as internet services are shut down in Garo Hills once again

TURA, June 13: Despite there being no reports of any wrong doing in the entire Garo Hills region, internet services in Garo Hills were shut down once again after an order passed by the additional chief secretary, MS Rao on Wednesday afternoon.
The suspension of services came even as the NGOs agitating for the removal of the non tribal MDC, Sofiur Rehman from the position of the chairman, forest advisory board of the GHADC, extended their deadline by another week.

Shillong heaves a sigh of relief with lifting of internet ban

SHILLONG, June 13: 12 days after fake information went viral on social media resulting in violence and thereby forcing the district administration of East Khasi Hills to impose curfew in the affected areas of the city, the authorities have now deemed it fit to lift the internet ban which was imposed since June 1.
The internet ban was imposed a day after three minor boys were assualted at Them Iew Mawlong that led to a violent protest by mob at Motphran area demanding shifting of settlers from Them Iew Mawlong.

PDF lifts suspension order on Sylliang

SHILLONG, June 13: While the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has decided to lift its suspension order on its MDC from Mawhati, James Sylliang it is yet to take the same decision on another MDC, Grace Mary Kharpuri who represents Nongskhen constituency in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
The decision was taken at a meeting of the central working committee (CWC) of the party and the Mawhati Zonal Committee held in the city here on Wednesday.

Shullai demands exemption of administered area from Town and Country Planning Act

SHILLONG, June 13: With the apprehension that the administered area may be included within the ambit of the Meghalaya Town and Country Planning Act, 1972, the BJP MLA representing South Shillong Constituency, Sanbor Shullai had demanded that the state government ensures that this administered area is exempted from the purview of this law.
This has come after the BJP backed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government has decided to withdraw the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority from implementing the Meghalaya Building Byelaws, 2011 in areas under the jurisdiction of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.

Danggo announces imminent shift of allegiance to NPP

SHILLONG, June 12: With Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma announcing on Tuesday that Ranikor will be upgraded to a Civil Sub-Division, the Congress MLA representing Ranikor constituency, Martin M Danggo has said that he will soon shift his allegiance to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
“The people of Ranikor have suffered as much as I have during the last four terms of my being with the Congress. As it is the wishes of the people here, I will accede to their demands,” Danggo said while addressing a crowd of over 5,000 followers at Ranikor.
