Praful Patel to visit Meghalaya on Jan 16-17

SHILLONG, Jan 11: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) National General Secretary and MP Rajya Sabha Praful Patel will be visiting the state from January 16-17.
During his visit, Patel will lay the foundation stone for the party’s office at Bivar Road, Shillong on January 16. He will then address a public rally at Tura, West Garo Hills District on the following day.
Narendra Verma in-charge North-East, NCP will also be accompanying him.

Pro – ILP NGOs to conduct surprise checkings of illegal immigrants in State

SHILLONG, Jan 10: Fearing that there will be a spillover effect following the updatation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in neighboring Assam, the 13 pro-ILP NGOs have decided to conduct checking of illegal immigrants coming to the state. The move is also a mark of protest against the state government’s failure to implement the anti-influx comprehensive mechanism.
They have decided to conduct surprise checkings, which will begin at any time.
The decision was taken at a meeting held here on Wednesday following the release of the NRC by Assam government with an aim to detect and depot illegal immigrants mainly from Bangladesh.

Meghalaya’s voter base increases to over 18.30 lakh, grows by 21.8%

SHILLONG, Jan 10: The final electoral roll for Meghalaya Assembly polls 2018 has been published and the state has registered a total of over 18.30 lakh voters. Releasing the final electoral roll here on Wednesday, State’s Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor informed that female voters in the state outnumber their male counterparts by over 17,000.
The names of 18,30,104 registered voters have been included in the final electoral roll, in which there are 9,23,848 female voters while male voters number is 90,62,256.

AICC coordinators in City to monitor candidates’ selection process

SHILLONG, Jan 10: Determined to get the best candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections, three All India Congress Committee (AICC) coordinators are camping in Meghalaya and helping out with the scrutiny process of the candidates before allotting the party tickets.
 Following the resignation of seven sitting legislators from Congress, the ruling party has geared up to fill the vacant post and bring more people under its fold.

CM turning Govt scheme into election scheme: PN Syiem

SHILLONG, Jan 10: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) on Wednesday accused Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma of turning the Meghalaya Livestock Mission into an “election scheme” of the Congress party to woo voters ahead of the state Assembly polls.
“The chief minister has turned the government’s Meghalaya Livestock Mission to an election scheme of the Congress just to woo voters,” PDF chairman Pynshngain N Syiem told reporters here on Wednesday.
