Cyclonic storm kills one, injures 28

Nongstoin, May 02: A powerful hailstorm on Thursday morning killed one person and injured another 28 persons critically in West Khasi hills region.
A heavy cyclonic storm hit several villages of West Khasi hills district at about 1.45 am. The villages include Umjaru, Mawsiangbah, Mawsiej, Nongkhniang , Mawroh Mawlangniang  and Nongkdait Village  under Nongstoin C& RD Block.

RKM visits affected cyclonic storm village in Mawshynrut

Nongstoin, May 02: A Team from Ram Krishna Mission (RKM), Sohra on Tuesday visited the village in Mawshynrut C&RD Block, West Khasi Hills which was affected by cyclonic storm on last April 10 last.
The team was led by Swami Maharaj along with two Magistrates from West Khasi Hills accompanied by a medical team who were also giving free medical aid to the people of the village.

Investigating Officer suspended for attempting to influence case

Tura, May 02: The case of the Edmund Ch Momin, who had been arrested on charges of continuously raping a 13 year old girl for over a year, took another casualty with the suspension of the Investigating Officer (I/O) in the case.
The said officer, Greenchibon M Sangma of the Women’s Police Station in Tura, has been suspended until an enquiry into the allegations is completed. Greenchibon was the Investigating officer for the case and a magisterial enquiry found her to be guilty of trying to intimidate, influence and mislead the victim.

Salary restraints a burgeoning crisis in state

SHILLONG, May 02: The teachers of Adhoc Lower Primary School to Higher Secondary Schools are living at life’s edge with regards to maintaining their livelihood as they are not receiving an adequate salary, asserted NCP leader from Rajabala constituency, Islam Hoque Choudhury.
Expressing his concern over the various problems faced by the teachers of the state Choudhury said, though the NCP is in coalition with the Congress led government in state, the scenario of the education department in the abode of clouds is very much neglected.

Khasi lady selected for ISRO Young Scientists Merit Award 2011

SHILLONG, May 02: Jenita Mary Nongkynrih, a local resident of Mawlai Mawroh, Shillong, has been selected for the Prestigious ISRO Young Scientists Merit Award carrying Prize money of Rs. 50,000 for the year 2011. She has done her Masters in Geography from North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
