WYWC probes MLA related schemes through RTI

NONGSTOIN, Aug 18: The Western Youth Welfare Council (WYWC) through the RTI has found that most of the MLA schemes including ISYDP, SRWP and CRRP 2008-2013 were left unimplemented, appearing only as names in the office of the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Nongstoin.
WYWC General Secretary, Reginal Thongni said that two sport clubs and one village emerged only in the names and these are Mawthoh Youth Sport Organization that was sanctioned for purchasing sport materials at Rs. 31250, Mawlangniang Area Sport Club that was sanctioned Rs. 100000 and Kinbah Nonglwai for which Rs 50,000 was sanctioned for construction of community hall.

Tura Jail Break: Hardcore GNLA militant escapes using bed sheets

Shillong, Aug 17: A hardcore Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant managed to escape from the Tura District jail, West Garo Hills, on Saturday night in a dramatic fashion.
The militant, identified as Kennedy T Sangma, was lodged in the jail under Meghalaya Prevention Detention Act (MPDA). He had been arrested from Baghmara, South Garo Hills, few months back.

3 persons lynched to death on witchcraft suspicion

SHILLONG, Aug 17: The belief in witchcraft practices seem to be unabated as mob who believes that anyone who is practicing this black-magic has to be killed continued with three persons being the latest victim of the mob fury on Friday night at Smit village.
The three identified as Yesly Mawthoh and his sons D Nongdhar and Besly Mawthoh were lynched to death after a resident of the same locality alleged that he was put under the black magic spell by the trio.

Bolsalgre Govt LP School: where education takes a back seat

Tura, Aug 17: If education is any indicator for the health of a region, then one look at the state of schools would give people an idea about how well a region is performing. By that count, the South Garo Hills region accounts for being in lowest bracket of development not only within the state, but the whole country as well. The state of the Government LP School in Bolsalgre, within the heart of the town of Baghmara, is one of neglect with some very basic necessities becoming a luxury.

NWA opposes Mukul’s ST claim

SHILLONG, Aug 17: The Nokma’s Welfare Association (NWA) has now objected to the Schedule Tribe (ST) status of Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, NWA claimed, “Having examined the facts, we all come to know that Dr Mukul is not genuine to claim himself to be from Sangma clan as his mother was Late Roshanara Begum, a non – Garo Muslim though his father may be a Garo.”
