Garo Hills coal miners’ joint meeting today

Shillong, May 30: All the Coal Miners of Garo hills mainly of Chokpot, Siju and Nongalbibra area will be having joint meeting at Nongalbibra on Friday with regard to the restriction imposed by Deputy Commissioner to  ban on coal mining in South Garo Hills whilst the other parts of Meghalaya continues mining.
Mentionably, the Deputy Commissioner of South Garo Hills imposed Sec 133 CrPC on May 20, 2013, violation for which will lead punishment under Secretion 188 of IPC. The DC has directed all coal merchants to clear all stock within a week.

Huge turnout at the Shillong Battle Rock

SHILLONG, May 30: S.C.E.N.E in collaboration with the Dept. of Arts and Culture conducted the first preliminary round of The Shillong Battle Rock 2013 (open beat contest) on Thursday at the U Soso Tham Auditorium.
As many as 47 rock bands showed up at the venue with styles ranging through all the subgenres of rock which the city is familiar with. This huge turnout of the bands is one of the biggest ever in the city, implying the growing popularity of the musical genre embedded once again in the youths of the once famed Rock Capital.
The second round of the contest will be held on Friday and will subsequently be followed by the Finals on Saturday.

NGOs unearth corruption: Cement found in sugar bags

Williamnagar, May 29: The town of Williamnagar was in for a rude shock when NGOs of the region found cement in bags of sugar from a very prominent supplier. The incident happened on Tuesday when some NGOs, namely, the Garo Students Union (GSU), the All India Garo Union (AIGU) along with few others went on surprise visit to the offices of a distributor by the name of Nanhelal Agarwal, wherein they alleged to have found cement mixed with sugar in the bags.

Woman survives gunshot

Nongstoin, May 29: A woman identified as Khristina Diengngan of Porkhadoh village, West Khasi Hills was seriously injured when she was shot at close range by one Hoding Diengngan of the same village.
The incident took place on May 26 last at Pyndengshahlang village, of Maweit area, West Khasi Hills.

Ostracized for practicing witchcraft, victim hints at NREGS link

SHILLONG, May 29: Forty-eight year old Selekost Shadap his wife Bahunlang Rympei and seven children were ostracized from the Mawrong village under the Ri Bhoi district by the executive committee of the Dorbar on the allegation that they were mehsohnoh (one who practice witchcraft) even as the victim later found that his name was in the job card holder list under the NREGS and that he had been paid wages which he had never withdrawn.
