SHILLONG, June 19: State influential NGOs on Wednesday staged a sit in protest at the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) premises, demanding that the Council must intervene and pass a resolution to stop the acquisition process by the government.

Two units of Assam's Kopili hydel project shut down

Shillong, June 19 (IANS): Two units of the 275 MW Kopili Hydel Project in Assam, owned by the North Eastern Electric Corp (NEEPCO), has been temporarily shutdown due to "acidification" of the reservoir water, a senior official said Wednesday.
The reservoir at Umrangso, a border area between Assam and Meghalaya, was found to contain acidic water discharged from the Kharkhar river, a tributary of the Kopili river originating in the Jaintia Hills.

HC directs SCB to produce report within 15 days

SHILLONG, June 19: The High Court (HC) on Tuesday has set aside the petition filed by a resident of Cantonment Board and directed the Shillong Cantonment Board (SCB) to look into the matter and give a report within 15 day’s time.

Late pope John Paul II may be made saint

Vatican City, June 19 (IANS/AKI):  Late pope John Paul II could be made a saint, after theologians from the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints reportedly approved his second miracle.
The Vatican is currently keeping the miracle a closely guarded secret, but like John Paul II's first miracle, it is said to concern a woman and will "amaze the world", an unnamed Vatican source told Italian media.

KHADC MDCs demands need to amend AADR 1951

SHILLONG, June 19: With district council election slated for next year, some of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) MDCs  Wednesday demanded the need to  amend the ‘Assam (and Meghalaya) Autonomous District (Constitution of District Councils) Rules (AADR), 1951’ so that other tribes are barred from contesting election for the KHADC MDC seat.
Moving a motion on the second day of the KHADC budget session on the need to safeguard and protect the indigenous Khasi tribe representation to KHADC, Jaiaw MDC Adelbert Nongrum said that there is an urgent need to delete the sub A of rule 128 of the Autonomous District Rules.
