‘Flying Squad’ to check “money and muscle power” during election

SHILLONG, Jan 08: In order to keep a tab on the use of “money and muscle power” during the upcoming Meghalaya Assembly election, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to deploy “flying squad” in different districts.
“To ensure holding of a ‘free, fair, peaceful election without compromise’, we would appoint flying squads to monitor movement of ‘money and use of muscle’ power during the voting, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, VS Sampath, told reporters here on Tuesday.

NCPCR pulls up labour department on child labor

SHILLONG, Jan 08: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) Tuesday warned the state labour departments that strong action would be taken against it if it fails to protect the rights of children after children were found to be working in the coal mines of Jaintia Hills district.
The labour department has earned the ire of the Commission member for keeping a report of the Tata Institute of Social Studies in cold storage which reported children working in seven coal depots in Jaintia Hills.

Ad hoc teachers’ salaries enhanced

SHILLONG, Jan 08: Living up to its promises, the state government on Tuesday approved the proposal for the enhancement of salaries of the teachers of both the ad hoc secondary schools and higher secondary schools in the state.
Earlier, last year, the state government had enhanced the salaries of both ad hoc lower primary teachers in 1225 schools and ad hoc upper primary teachers in 844 schools in the state.
“With this decision in place, the government has fulfilled its promises towards the teaching community in the state,” Education Minister Dr RC Laloo told reporters after the Cabinet meeting here.

Mawlai Mawiong Abattoir 80% completed

SHILLONG, Jan 08: More than 80 percent of the work is completed of the newly constructed abattoir (slaughter house) at Mawlai Mawiong, informed Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Bindo M Lanong, after inspecting the slaughter house on Tuesday.
He informed that 240 cows and pigs and 160 goats will be slaughtered per day in the slaughter house and it would be done mechanically instead of manually.

Grand Council of Chiefs demand immediate implementation of IOA & AA

SHILLONG, Jan 08: Discontented with the delay in implementation of Instrument of Accession & Annexed Agreement (IOA & AA) signed between the Khasi States and the Government of India, the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya consisting of the Federation of Khasi States, the Council of Dolloi (Jaintia Chiefs), and the Council of Nokmas (Garo Chiefs) convened a meeting on Tuesday to demand from the Central Government to immediately implement the IOA & AA.
Addressing in a news conference here on Tuesday, Chairman of the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya, John Kharshiing informed reporters that the Council will organize the Fourth People’s Parliament on February 13 at Nongkhlaw.
