SHILLONG, Nov 11: Meghalaya’s dismal health scenario has emerged in the form of Leprosy, this time. This is an alarming signal considering the fact that the disease was not seen around for quite a long time and was under control. The state is however better than many of the regional states but it still has a glaring double digit figure except Manipur which scored single digit cases of the disfiguring disease. According to a national media report, Assam has recorded a staggering 616 cases this year of the chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, an acid-fast, rod-shaped bacillus, followed by Nagaland (32), Tripura (23), Sikkim (20), Mizoram (18), Arunachal Pradesh (17), Meghalaya (15) and Manipur (six).
Shillong, Nov 11: Sometimes the best stories come out from the darkest corners. Shillong too has its own share of dark corners – the slums. Most of the children living in these slums were child labours, illiterate and drop-outs and were raised in tiny rundown shacks with no toilets, running water, electricity or medical care living in families with little income where food is scare and debarred of all their basic rights.
But these slum children are now getting ready to face the world ahead after being enrolled in Shishu Shiksha Ghar (SSG) - an educational centre providing non-formal education along with other needs as per the Rights of the Children.
Shillong, Nov 11: In a fresh case of arson, two persons threw a petrol bomb at Pine View wine store in Polo Bazar on Monday night.
The shop belongs to renowned businessman O P Agarwal. The incident happened at about 8 pm.
Although no one was injured but the counter of the shop was damaged in the incident, police informed.
Shillong, Nov 11: North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, observed the “National Educational Day” on Monday to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s first Education Minister, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
The function was presided over by Pro-Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Prof. B. Myrboh, and attended by a galaxy of teachers and scholars from amongst the university community.
