STP tightens noose on modified silencers, HID bulbs menace

SHILLONG, May 03: The Shillong Traffic department has decided to come hard on vehicles with modified silencers which emit noise pollution and those with High Intensity Discharge (HID) bulbs on headlights which blinds the drivers of vehicles coming from the opposite direction.

Yet another government vehicle torched

SHILLONG, May 03: A government vehicle was on Friday afternoon torched by miscreants in city.
The incident took place at about 3 pm when miscreants torched a government vehicle (Bolero) bearing registration no. ML-01-1886 at Lower Lachumiere, Shillong, police said.

Three killed in Assam road mishap

GUWAHATI, May 03: At least three people were killed in a road mishap in Assam’s Nagaon district on Friday, officials said.
The mishap took place at NH-37 near Dighaliati under Raha police station in the middle Assam district on Friday morning.
“The accident occurred as a result of a head on collision between a speedy car and a motor bike,” a police official said. The deceased persons were identified as Nikot Ali, Abdul Rashid and his son.

Hornbill conservator Aparajita Datta gets Whitley Award

New Delhi, May 03 (IANS): Conservator Aparajita Datta has won the Whitley Award, also called "Green Oscar", for her work to save threatened hornbills in the forests of Arunachal Pradesh.
Datta is one of eight grassroots conservation leaders awarded a share of prize funding worth £295,000 by the Whitley Fund for Nature.

Australian found dead in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 03 (IANS): A 43-year-old Australian was found dead under mysterious circumstances in his house here, police said Friday.
Brandan Christopher Field was staying along with his Indian wife Antoinette and two children in Nongrah suburb of the state capital.
