Weeklong commemoration of Kiang Nangbah’s 150th death anniversary concludes

SHILLONG Dec 30: The Seiñ Raij Jowai concluded the week long commemoration of the 150th death anniversary of freedom fighter Kiang Nangbah on Sunday.
The culmination of the program was held under the leadership of O.R Challam at the Myngkoi Pyrdi grounds and in the presence of Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills District P.S. Dkhar as the Chief Guest.


Traditional rites were performed at Moolikso hill, the last known shelter of Kiang Nangbah. Patriotic songs from the youth of Dulong and a short play on the life of Kiang Nangbah by Loompyrdi Yongpiah locality were also a part of the programme. During the weeklong event, the Seiñ Raij in collaboration with the Art and Culture Society, West Jaintia Hills District had organized various programmes which included essay writing, painting competitions and others. A prominent part of the celebration was the reviving of Kiang Nangbah’s childhood games.
Barnabas Nangbah, relative of Kiang Nangbah graced the occasion as a special guest. Other dignitaries present at the occasion were K.C. Rymbai, O.H. Toi Secretary of the Seiñ Raij Jowai, Dr. B.S.Challam, Rev. HH Mohrmen and Wyraiki Kharbuki.
In a related event, the Seiñ Riaj along with the District Administration organized a National Seminar on “Resistance Movement Against the British Raij with Special reference to Kiang Nangbah” on Friday last. The event was chaired by the DC of West Jaintia Hills. Prominent speakers at this seminar included Dr. P.A. Bhatt, Professor University of Karnataka, Dr. Rehman, NEHU, Dr. S.N.Lamare, NEHU, R.Lamarr from Kiang Nangbah Govt College, Dr. E.R.Tongper NEHU, Dr. A. Lyngdoh from Kiang Nangbah Govt College and W. Sumer from the Women’s Wing of the Sein Raij Jowai.
