Bus returning children from picnic plunges into gorge

TURA, Dec 08: A day of fun and frolic took a tragic turn after a bus carrying school children to a picnic met with an accident leading to one person losing his life after the hired bus fell into a gorge near the Dadenggre Civil Sub Division office in West Garo Hills (WGH). The accident also left many school going children injured, with some said to be in critical condition.
The incident took place on Friday evening when the bus was returning from the picnic spot, Chibagre near Rongram. The driver lost control of the bus which fell into the nearby gorge, adjoining a rubber plantation.


The children had gone in a hired vehicle for their annual picnic after the conclusion of their academic year.
According to police sources, the hired bus was carrying children from the Rom Agal UP School. There were close to 60 people (including 54 school children) inside the bus when the incident took place.
The handyman of the bus lost his life on the spot while 2 critically injured students were rushed to Tura Civil Hospital for treatment.
Several students are currently undergoing treatment at the Dadenggre Community Health Centre (CHC) while a few who were more critical were also rushed in ambulances to Tura for further medical care.
Immediately after being informed of the incident, Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh and Superintendent of Police Dr MGR Kumar rushed to the spot to check on the condition of the injured. The SDO and SDPO of Dadenggre along with fire and emergency personnel also accompanied the DC and SP.
“All efforts are being made to ensure they get the earliest and best medical care,” said Dr Kumar when contacted. He further added that an investigation into the mishap and its cause has been initiated.
