Police given 10 days to submit report on activist attack

SHILLONG, Dec 06: The police department has been given ten days to submit a report on the status of investigations into the brutal attack on CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing and her aide, Amita Sangma.
This directive was given by the Meghalaya High Court here on Thursday which had adjourned the hearing on the petition filed by Amita here on Thursday by stating, ‘after ten days latest status of investigation shall be filed’.


The Investigating Officer (IO) of the case was also present during the hearing wherein the latest status of investigation was also filed which revealed that various steps have been taken in the case.
However, the Court has stated that some more cautious steps are required to be taken so that the progress of investigation is not hampered in any manner.
During the hearing, it was also brought to the notice of the Court that there are some other persons involved as per the latest intelligence inputs and appropriate action against them has also been initiated.
The names of those persons who police believe to be involved in the murderous attack on the two women activists were produced in a sealed envelope.
Meanwhile, the AG assured that the Police Department more particularly, the Investigating Officer and the SP of East Jaintia Hills District will complete the investigation of the case at an earliest.
The next hearing on the matter is scheduled to be held on December 19.
Agnes and Amita were critically injured after they were brutally attacked by a group of 30-40 people suspected to be coal mafias at Tuber Sohshrieh village, just after taking pictures of coal laden trucks on November 8. Police however have so far arrested only six persons in connection with the case.
