Annual Sustainability Conference concludes at IIM Shillong

SHILLONG, Dec 01: IIM Shillong concluded the 7th edition of SUSCON, the Annual Sustainability Conference on Sustainability, on Saturday, weaved around the theme ‘Community, Conservation and Cooperation’.
The 3-day conference which started on 29th November 2018 was flagged off with a welcome address by Prof. KeyaSengupta, Director of IIM Shillong along with Prof. Sanjoy Mukherjee, introducing the conference and its progress over the last 6 editions.

The event hosted, R. Bandyopadhyay, Former Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of Indiaas the Chief Guest, as he shared, “Competitiveness, Sustainability and Inclusiveness are the key components of the Triple Bottom Line approach” and emphasized the necessity of management education that encompasses components to improve economic profit, save the planet and provide sustainable growth opportunities to the people.
The Conference encompassed a series of 3 plenary sessions which witnessed stimulating ideas being brought to the forum by the dignitaries such as Mr. TamasVaress, Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary, Dr. K. Baharul Islam, IIM Kashipur, Prof. Ranjan Banerjee, Dean, SPJIMR, Prof. Saral Mukherjee, IIM Ahmedabad, Alkesh Wadhwani, Director, Gates Foundation, Toki Blah, Former Chairperson,Social Audit Committee, Meghalaya, Shillong, Sudipta Das, Former Partner in Charge, Climate Change and Sustainability, Ernst and Young.
The plenary sessions saw a discussion on themes ranging fromglobalization, finance, leadership, technology and organization, and their integration with sustainability.
The Committee received over 100 papers from leading institutions within and outside the country covering various crucial topics including climate change, developmental economics and CSR which was presented in 15 panels spanning across 5 technical sessions. The Conference also hosted a cultural programme withgroups from the North East performing local dance forms and a theatre play being presented by the Bangalore Little Theatre group.
Vijay Padaki, one of the founding faculty members of IIM Bangalore, currently the convener of the theatre group, presented a custom-designed gold pocket watch to Prof. Keya Sengupta as a tribute to Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam that was made by MS Zahed, a student of Padakiat IIM Bangalore, who later went on to become the Chairman and Managing Director of HMT Limited.
Prof. Keya Sengupta, Director of IIM Shillong felicitated the participants during the valedictory function, with the esteemed guests and presenters from all over India and abroad in attendance. Leveraging the unique assets of expertise of IIM Shillong as a hub of sustainability in business, the Conference proved to be highly successful by covering global perspectives and practices, keeping in view the national priorities as well as the regional challenges.
