SHILLONG, Nov 10: The AYWO has expressed its gratitude to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government for introducing a resolution or inclusion of Khasi and Garo Language in the Eight Schedule of Constitution of India.
It may be noted here that the MDA had introduced this resolution in the recently concluded session of the State Assembly and also resolved the Resolution on 27th of September 2018.
Thanking the government for fulfilling one of its 9 charter demands, the NGO said that it is of the opinion that the inclusion of Garo language in Eight Schedule will definitely be a boon to the people of Garo Hills in Particular and A’chik people as a whole.
In a letter sent to Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma on Friday, the AYWO, while thanking Sangma for his government’s initiative opined that the Garo language is partially ready to be in Eight Schedule and even if lacks in certain ‘brownie’ points, MDA govt should immediately initiate groundwork and make necessary rectification in the process instead of solely rely on Union Government to pick the lacunae and asked to correct the same.
The AYWO has also expressed its desire for the government to be pro active while dealing with such an important issue which will determine the recognition of ‘linguistic minorities’ and clear all the hurdles, which is acting as a ‘barrier’.
As such, the AYWO has appealed to the Chief Minister to ensure that the government invests serious effort to get Khasi and Garo included in Eight Schedule and live up to the aspirations of the people of the state.
