SHILLONG, Nov 01: Following the United Democratic Party (UDP), which has done so already, now the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) is likely to propose a name to be the common candidate of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) for the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
“As a party, we already have our own candidate. However, the decision whether we should propose his/her name before the MDA coordination committee will be taken up by the Central Working Committee of the party,” PDF leader Hamletson Dohling said on Thursday.
Dohling, who is also the state’s Urban Affairs Minister, also informed that the issue relating to the Lok Sabha elections will be one of the main agendas to be discussed during the meeting of the CWC to be held on November 5.
He said that it would be incorrect for him to disclose the name of the probable candidate of the party at the moment since the matter is pending before the CWC for its approval.
The recently held meeting of the MDA coordination committee to discuss the issue of having common candidates for the Shillong and Tura parliamentary seats was inconclusive after the coalition partners had sought more time to discuss within their respective parties.
The MDA comprises of six political parties which include National People’s Party (NPP), United Democratic Party (UDP), Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the PDF.
The UDP, which mooted the idea of having a common candidate, had also announced former Nongthymmai legislator Jemino Mawthoh as its official MP candidate for the Shillong seat and his name would soon be projected before the MDA for its support.
Asked whether the UDP had approached the PDF for supporting its candidate, Dohling said so far there has been no official communication received by the party in this regard.
