SHILLONG, Oct 30: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government led by the National People’s Party (NPP) has been accused of having failed to ensure that normalcy returns to Shillong city after the violent protests which began on May 31 last.
In this regard, the Leader of Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma has said that the issue has been mishandled by the state government.
He alleged that the road at Them Iew Mawlong is yet to be opened as barricades are still being put up till date which has led to dislocation of the normal movement of people and traffic.
“This only indicates the failure in restoration of peace and restoration of normalcy. Are they so incompetent that they cannot deal with these kind of challenges which confront the government,” Dr. Sangma said.
Stating that any government of the day will be confronted by challenges, he said but the government and leaders are expected to be able deal and overcome those challenges and ultimately restore normalcy. “However, till now they can’t restore normalcy and this is completely reflective of their incompetent and insensitivity which is condemnable,” he added.
It may be mentioned here that the high level committee was constituted by the government following the violent protest which erupted at Motphran and Mawkhar area and lasted for five days over the issue related to shifting of settlers from Them Iew Mawlong.
The violent agitation started following an exchange of words between a bus driver and a lady residing at Them Iew Mawlong on May 31 over the parking of a bus.
The altercation that led to the assault of the driver and two other persons by some men in the area, caused a volatile situation since May 31 night with unruly mob demanding shifting of settlers from Them ïew Mawlong.
