SHILLONG, Oct 08: The Union Minister for road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari has assured to take up the problem of land for the Shillong-Dawki road widening project as has been informed by Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong on Monday.
“He (Gadkari) has assured us that he would take care of the matter and would soon convene a meeting with the defence ministry for providing land for the project so we are waiting. Next week I may also go to New Delhi,” Tynsong had said in this regard.
He said that the portion starting from Umshyrpi to 7th Mile, Upper Shillong has been proposed to be converted into four-lane road adding that this stretch include forest and defence land.
“We have held a meeting with the forest department and it has given its consent to provide the land,” Tynsong said.
The 95km road project estimated at Rs 1187.5 crore is to be funded by Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under loan agreement. Including land acquisition the total project cost was estimated at Rs 1377.5 crore.
Meanwhile, Tynsong informed that the consultant agency-Meghalaya Institute Governance (MIG) has been asked to complete the social impact assessment (SIA) for the remaining stretch of the road.
“We have also asked them to simultaneously start the process of land acquisition,” he said.
