SHILLONG, Oct 05: The former five – time Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr. DD Lapang has predicted dark days for the Congress party in India under the leadership of All India Congress Committee (AICC) president, Rahul Gandhi even as he added that Gandhi is not Prime Minister material.
“I don’t see any bright days ahead under his (Rahul Gandhi) leadership,” Dr. Lapang, who resigned last month from the party of which he has been a key member for four decades, said here on Friday.
On the prospect of the Congress ahead of the crucial LS polls, Dr. Lapang opined that Rahul Gandhi has failed in many counts and reiterated that he is not a prime minister material.
“With this type of people to be in the helm of affairs as Prime Minister, the country will go to nowhere,” he said adding “I am sorry to repeat this they have projected Rahul as the next PM but I would like to counter that Rahul is not a PM material as he lacks diplomacy, lacks in the way of dealing with things, lacks humility and he lacks maturity.”
Stating that the Gandhi family in the past had raised many leaders who really can serve the party and the country, Lapang however said, “But I am sorry to say that this time they don’t have a quality leader.”
Dr. Lapang also opined that it is high time for the Congress to think that leaders should not be somebody from the family and that a ‘survival of the fittest’ should be the order of the day with the right people at the right place.
“You see I am not an expert or a fortune teller but I left the Congress because of way they are running the party is quite different from those old leaders who deserve appreciation,” he said.
Dr. Lapang however maintained that he will not go back to the Congress even if Rahul is removed as the Congress national president but says that he still have high regard for Sonia Gandhi for being like a mother from whom he got a lot of advice.
Dr. Lapang also informed that he is thinking of meeting her (Sonia) to thank her for her guidance and blessings but only when all the dust settles.
