SHILLONG, Sep 14: While members of the ruling MDA coalition is aghast with the resignation of veteran leader Dr DD Lapang, the Opposition Congress is on a damage control mode with the AICC leaders at the Centre trying to reconcile with him and stop him from leaving the party.
The former Chief Minister who had served the Congress for over four decade had submitted his resignation on Thursday stating that the AICC policy of phasing out the elderly as one of the main reason.

He added that the party has great respect for DD Lapangs and under his leadership the party has risen in the state and party owes a lot to the great leader.
Terming this as a great loss, he added that party would not sideline any senior leader and party’ would love to have them as father figure.
He added that efforts will be made to reach out to him and request him to be in the party.
“I request him to reconsider his decision and stay with us as fatherly figure,” he said.
He also claimed that the party has not sidelined him at all.
Pointing out that Lapang was not keeping in a good health, Shangpliang said that this was why a new president was selected and Lapang was made the advisor of the party. Shangpliang said he was also involved in all meeting and the party apprised him of all issues.
Meanwhile, Senior UDP Working President, Bindo M Lanong said that it is important to respect and honour a man of DD Lapang’s stature and experience.
He said it is sad that he has been unceremoniously given a cold shoulder by the Congress leadership.
He felt this is not the way for Congress to treat Lapang and said that it indicates that the party did not recognize Lapang’s contributions.
He also said that the Congress is what it is today in Meghalaya due to Lapang’s contribution and the present leadership has to take note of it.
“I am pained at this treatment and such treatment should not be meted out to such a leader be it in Congress or any other party,” he added.
