TURA, Sep 08: Angered at the absolutely poor condition of the heart-line of the South Garo Hills (SGH) region – the National Highway - 62, various NGOs have called for a two day Non Cooperation Movement (NCM) in the entire district to condemn the continued negligence of the people of the district.
The NGOs, including the Garoland State Movement Committee, Mothers’ Union and Achik Students’ Welfare Association, have called for the 2 day NCM on September 11 and 12 and will be a dawn to dusk protest movement (5 am to 5 pm).
Repairs on the highway that is the lifeline of the people of the district have been minimal and even though money has been sanctioned by the state for repairs, contractors have played truant and repairs have been slow to come about.
The NGOs have called for the protest alleging lack of attention to the plight being faced by the people of the district despite being the highest revenue generating district in the entire Garo Hills region. They have also appealed to all residents to support the protest that seeks development for the region through its road infrastructure.
“We are forced to protest as the government has turned a deaf ear to our district. The situation has remained the same over the past 5 years and we face an uphill task if we have to move about or even take patients to other places. The situation is unbearable and needs an immediate upheaval,” said the protesting NGOs.
Emergency services, including hospital services, fire brigade, ambulances etc will be exempted from the impact of the NCM.
