SHILLONG, Aug 11: The West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh has categorically stated that only indigenous eatables to be served in government functions.
In an interaction with embers of Tura Traders community, Development Committees and other stake holders in DRDA Hall on Friday, the DC expressed his concern over the prevalence of junk food in the daily life of the youth and pointed out that most of these products contain harmful preservatives.

He therefore, advised the people to inculcate the habit of eating locally made chips made of bananas and jackfruits which are organic and free from all such harmful substances. “This will not only ensure better health for people particularly for children but also greatly boost the economy and encourage the local self help groups who produced these products,” he said.
The DC, who has been relentlessly pursuing the ban of water bottles towards achieving cleaner and greener environment, has also called for installation of low cost RO Water dispenser in all the strategic places of the town, particularly in the Tura Super Market.
Ram Singh said he has been issuing advisories and directives towards this end from the last several months and asserted he would pursue the matter with much more vigour, intensity and with seriousness to reach to its logical conclusion.
The DC also said that plastics have permeated all aspects of our daily life; and agreed that the issue is not only a difficult proposition but a sensitive as well.
As such, he said that the fight will not be successful unless there is strong will power from the people themselves against the use plastics. He also asked people to completely do away with use of multi layered plastic bags and suggested that local entrepreneurs can come up with cloth bags with some catchy slogans and murals on environment themes.
